備嘗艱辛、終夜不寐、載飢載渴、時復齋戒、忍苦耐勞、寒而無衣。

爾其承我之軛、效我之謙遜克己、則爾必得心曠神怡；

且主亦恐我以受此特達之啟示、而驕矜自慢也；故容沙殫加我以肉身上之痛楚、有如芒刺之着體、蓋不欲吾之得意而忘形耳。因是吾雖曾三次求主脫吾於此苦、然主謂吾曰：『吾之聖寵、已足助爾、蓋吾德之彰、即在柔弱中也。』故吾欣然以柔弱為樂、庶幾基督之神德、能常寓吾身。吾為基督之故、凡肉體之柔弱、以及一切侮辱、艱難、窘迫、困苦、皆所甘受。蓋吾之弱、正吾之所以強也。

故吾人立身處世、在在欲自表為天主之忠僕、事事堅忍；故患難也、匱乏也、困苦也、受撻也、監禁也、遘亂也、操作也、守夜也、齋戒也、貞潔也、好學也、克己也、溫和也、聖神之靈感也、篤實之愛德也、直言真道也、宣揚天主之德威也、［何一而非自表為天主之忠僕者乎？］而仁義之甲、護衛左右、無論榮辱毀譽、［皆不足以改吾人之節操也。］故吾人雖似虛偽之徒、而實則至誠無妄也；雖似無聞、而實則闇然日章也；雖似將死、而實則生氣蓬勃也；雖似受刑、而實則真我無恙也；雖似不堪其憂、而實則不勝其樂也；雖似窮乏、而實則所以豐人也；雖似一無所有、而實則無所不有也。

茲者我葆樂本人、欲憑基督之溫柔謙恭、有所求於爾焉。頗聞人言、予與爾相處、晤時則恭、暌時則踞。

蓋天主已使我輩為其宗徒者、似成為最卑賤之人、一若擬死之囚、又似優伶演劇於世、以博人神之一笑者。吾儕已為基督之故、而成斯世之狂徒矣；爾等則優遊基督之中、而聰明自若也。吾儕弱而爾等強、爾等享榮而吾儕蒙辱。吾儕至今猶忍饑耐渴、衣衫襤褸、被毆受撻、無家可歸、躬自操作、不遑寧處；被人詬誶、我則福之；被人凌虐、我則耐之；被人譭謗、我則禱之。而吾儕至今猶為天下之所唾棄、眾污之所歸集也！

頗聞人言：『彼之書札、雖雷厲風行；而彼之形軀、則柔弱無能、言語更無足輕重。』

豈因吾之薄於己而厚於爾、乃反獲罪戾乎？

耶穌曰：『是故士子而熟諳天國之理者、譬諸一家之主、庫中取物、新舊兼備。』

此固非爾等所學於基督者也。爾等果已得其真傳。受其薰陶、則應痛革前非、
