Psalm 74
Prayer for Israel
1Why have you rejected us forever, God?
Why does your anger burn
2Remember your congregation,
which you purchased long ago
Remember Mount Zion where you dwell.74:2 Is 8:18
3Make your way74:3 Lit Lift up your steps to the perpetual ruins,
4Your adversaries roared in the meeting place
where you met with us.74:4 Lit in your meeting place
5It was like men in a thicket of trees,
wielding axes,74:5 Jr 46:22
6then smashing all the carvings
with hatchets and picks.74:6 Lm 2:2
7They set your sanctuary on fire;
they utterly74:7 Lit they to the ground desecrated
8They said in their hearts,
“Let’s oppress them relentlessly.”
They burned every place throughout the land
where God met with us.74:8 Lit every meeting place of God in the land74:8 Jos 18:1; 1Sm 3:21; 7:16; 2Ch 17:9; Ps 83:4
9There are no signs for us to see.
There is no longer a prophet.
10God, how long will the enemy mock?
11Why do you hold back your hand?
12God my King is from ancient times,
13You divided the sea with your strength;
14you crushed the heads of Leviathan;
15You opened up springs and streams;74:15 Ps 104:10–11
16The day is yours, also the night;
you established the moon and the sun.74:16 Gn 1:14–18; Ps 104:19
17You set all the boundaries of the earth;
you made summer and winter.74:17 Gn 8:22; Jb 38:10–11; Pr 8:29; Jr 5:22
18Remember this: the enemy has mocked the Lord,
19Do not give to beasts the life of your dove;74:19 One Hb ms, LXX, Syr read life that praises you
for the dark places of the land are full of violence.74:20 Ezk 7:23
21Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame;
Remember the insults
that fools bring against you all day long.74:22 Ps 79:12
23Do not forget the clamor of your adversaries,
the tumult of your opponents that goes up constantly.74:23 Ps 65:7
