「耶路撒冷啊！耶路撒冷啊！你常殺害先知，又用石頭打死派到你那裡的使者。我多次想要招聚你的兒女，像母雞將小雞聚集在翅膀底下，可是你們卻不肯。看啊！你們的家園將一片荒涼。

敵人伸手奪去她的一切珍寶。她目睹外族人闖入聖殿——那是耶和華禁止他們進入的地方。

那天上的耶路撒冷則是自由的，是我們的母親。因為聖經上說：「不生育、未生養的婦人啊，要快樂；未曾生產的女子啊，要高聲歡呼，因為沒有丈夫的比有丈夫的兒女更多。」

地上三分之二的人必遭剷除、毀滅，只剩下三分之一的人存活。這是耶和華說的。我必使這三分之一的人受到火一般的考驗；我必像熬煉銀子一樣熬煉他們，像試煉金子一樣試煉他們。他們必呼求我的名，我必回應他們。我必說，『這是我的子民。』他們必說，『耶和華是我們的上帝。』」

你們要因我創造的一切而永遠歡喜快樂。看啊，我要創造一個充滿喜樂的耶路撒冷，其中的居民個個歡欣。

巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒率領他的軍隊和他統治的各邦國攻打耶路撒冷及其周圍城邑時，耶和華對耶利米說：

那時，凱撒奧古斯都頒下諭旨，命羅馬帝國的人民都辦理戶口登記。

因為那是上帝創造天地以來空前絕後的大災難。
