They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal:“ The Lord knows those who are his,” and,“ Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king,“ O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

Therefore they were destroyed.

And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said,“ Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,“‘ Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain?The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed’—for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of other lands? Were the gods of the nations of those lands at all able to deliver their lands out of my hand?Who among all the gods of those nations that my fathers devoted to destruction was able to deliver his people from my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you from my hand?Now, therefore, do not let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you in this fashion, and do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand!’”

When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God.Then they came near and said before the king, concerning the injunction,“ O king! Did you not sign an injunction, that anyone who makes petition to any god or man within thirty days except to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said,“ The thing stands fast, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be revoked.”Then they answered and said before the king,“ Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or the injunction you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.”Then the king, when he heard these words, was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king,“ Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. The king declared to Daniel,“ May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions.As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish. The king declared to Daniel,“ O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”Then Daniel said to the king,“ O king, live forever!My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.”Then the king was exceedingly glad, and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.And the king commanded, and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and cast into the den of lions— they, their children, and their wives. And before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth:“ Peace be multiplied to you.I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel, for he is the living God, enduring forever; his kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end.He delivers and rescues; he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, he who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.”So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

The disciples said to him,“ Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?”Jesus answered,“ Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people,“ This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying,“ The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and the Lord will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you.But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you.Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the Lord sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”

On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family.And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired,“ By what power or by what name did you do this?”Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,“ Rulers of the people and elders,if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed,let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— by him this man is standing before you well.This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying,“ Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe( now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter), and they talked with her.
