“ But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly; They became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.

“ But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.

“ But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.

For I know your rebellion and your stubbornness; behold, as long as I have been alive with you until today, you have been rebellious against the Lord; how much more, then, after my death?

Then You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, Against all his servants and all the people of his land; For You knew that they acted arrogantly toward them, And You made a name for Yourself as it is this day.

And admonished them in order to turn them back to Your Law. Yet they acted arrogantly and did not listen to Your commandments but sinned against Your ordinances, Which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them. And they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck, and would not listen.

“ But My people did not listen to My voice, And Israel did not obey Me.So I gave them over to the stubbornness of their heart, To walk by their own plans.Oh that My people would listen to Me, That Israel would walk in My ways!I would quickly subdue their enemies And turn My hand against their adversaries.

“ You men who are stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.

“ This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:‘ Behold, I am going to bring on this city and all its towns the entire disaster that I have declared against it, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to listen to My words.’ ”

And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation that did not prepare its heart And whose spirit was not faithful to God.The sons of Ephraim were archers equipped with bows, Yet they turned back on the day of battle.They did not keep the covenant of God And refused to walk in His Law;They forgot His deeds And His miracles that He had shown them.He performed wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.He divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap.Then He led them with the cloud by day And all the night with a light of fire.He split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them plenty to drink like the ocean depths.He brought forth streams from the rock And made waters run down like rivers.Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert.And in their heart they put God to the test By asking for food that suited their taste.Then they spoke against God; They said,“ Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He also provide bread? Will He prepare meat for His people?”Therefore the Lord heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also mounted against Israel,Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.Yet He commanded the clouds above And opened the doors of heaven;He rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them food from heaven.Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.He made the east wind blow in the sky And by His power He directed the south wind.When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.So they ate and were well filled, And He satisfied their longing.Yet before they had abandoned their longing, While their food was in their mouths,The anger of God rose against them And killed some of their strongest ones, And subdued the choice men of Israel.In spite of all this they still sinned And did not believe in His wonderful works.So He brought their days to an end in futility, And their years to an end in sudden terror.When He killed them, then they sought Him, And they returned and searched diligently for God;And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their Redeemer.But they flattered Him with their mouth And lied to Him with their tongue.For their heart was not steadfast toward Him, Nor were they faithful with His covenant.But He, being compassionate, forgave their wrongdoing and did not destroy them; And often He restrained His anger And did not stir up all His wrath.So He remembered that they were only flesh, A wind that passes and does not return.How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert!Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel.They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the enemy,When He performed His signs in Egypt And His marvels in the field of Zoan,And turned their rivers to blood, And their streams, so that they could not drink.He sent swarms of flies among them that devoured them, And frogs that destroyed them.He also gave their crops to the grasshopper And the product of their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hailstones And their sycamore trees with frost.He also turned their cattle over to the hailstones, And their herds to bolts of lightning.He sent His burning anger upon them, Fury and indignation and trouble, A band of destroying angels.He leveled a path for His anger; He did not spare their souls from death, But turned their lives over to the plague,And struck all the firstborn in Egypt, The first and best of their vigor in the tents of Ham.But He led His own people out like sheep, And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;He led them safely, so that they did not fear; But the sea engulfed their enemies.So He brought them to His holy land, To this hill country which His right hand had gained.He also drove out the nations from them And apportioned them as an inheritance by measurement, And had the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God And did not keep His testimonies,But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers; They turned aside like a treacherous bow.For they provoked Him with their high places And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.When God heard them, He was filled with wrath And He utterly rejected Israel;So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh, The tent which He had pitched among people,And He gave up His strength to captivity And His glory into the hand of the enemy.He also turned His people over to the sword, And was filled with wrath at His inheritance.Fire devoured His young men, And His virgins had no wedding songs.His priests fell by the sword, And His widows could not weep.Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, Like a warrior overcome by wine.He drove His adversaries backward; He put on them an everlasting disgrace.He also rejected the tent of Joseph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.And He built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has established forever.He also chose His servant David And took him from the sheepfolds;From the care of the ewes with nursing lambs He brought him To shepherd Jacob His people, And Israel His inheritance.So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, And guided them with his skillful hands.

“ But Jeshurun became fat and kicked— You have become fat, thick, and obstinate— Then he abandoned God who made him, And rejected the Rock of his salvation.

Because I know that you are obstinate, And your neck is an iron tendon And your forehead bronze,

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, As on the day of Massah in the wilderness,“ When your fathers put Me to the test, They tested Me, though they had seen My work.For forty years I was disgusted with that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways.

while it is said,“ Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.”

We have sinned like our fathers, We have gone astray, we have behaved wickedly.

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear allegiance by God. But he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord God of Israel.

You generation, look to the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, Or a land of thick darkness? Why do My people say,‘ We are free to roam; We will no longer come to You’?

Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not turn Your attention to the stubbornness of this people, or to their wickedness, or their sin.

However, they did not listen, but stiffened their neck like their fathers, who did not believe in the Lord their God.

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people.

If only they had such a heart in them, to fear Me and keep all My commandments always, so that it would go well with them and with their sons forever!

But they rebelled And grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them.

But encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called“ today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

“ Yet you were unwilling to go up; instead you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God;and you grumbled in your tents and said,‘ Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us.Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, by saying,“ The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.” ’But I said to you,‘ Do not be terrified, nor fear them.The Lord your God, who goes before you, will Himself fight for you, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes,and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, on all of the road which you have walked until you came to this place.’Yet in spite of all this, you did not trust the Lord your God,who goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to make camp, in the fire by night to show you the way by which you should go, and in the cloud by day.

“ Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people.

And when the Lord sent you from Kadesh barnea, saying,‘ Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; you neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice.You have been rebellious toward the Lord since the day I knew you.

If only you had paid attention to My commandments! Then your well being would have been like a river, And your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

A person often rebuked who becomes obstinate Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.

And He said,“ If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and listen to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer.”

Hear, My people, and I will admonish you; Israel, if you would listen to Me!

The Lord also said to me,‘ I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a stubborn people.

Now do not stiffen your neck like your fathers, but yield to the Lord and enter His sanctuary which He has consecrated forever, and serve the Lord your God, that His burning anger may turn away from you.

But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
