On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

It was the 24th day of the seventh month. The Israelites gathered together again. They didn’t eat any food. They wore the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They put dust on their heads.

Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.

所以我們禁食，尋求我們的神，他就應允我們。

約書亞就撕裂自己的衣服，和以色列人的長老，在耶和華的約櫃前，一同俯伏在地，直到晚上，也把塵土撒在頭上。

七月初一日，以斯拉祭司把律法書帶到所有聽了能明白的男女會眾面前。

有一個便雅憫人跑離戰場，衣服撕裂，頭蒙塵土，當天來到示羅。

他們事奉主，並且禁食的時候，聖靈說：“要為我把巴拿巴和掃羅分別出來，去作我呼召他們作的工。”於是他們禁食禱告，為兩人按手，就派他們去了。

第三天，忽然有一個人從掃羅的營回來，衣服撕裂，頭上蒙灰。這人一來到大衛面前，就俯伏在地上叩拜他。

王的諭旨和命令傳到的各省各地，猶大人都大大悲哀，禁食、哭泣、悲傷；許多人披上麻衣，躺在灰塵中。

“又在七月十五日，你們收了那地的出產以後，要守耶和華的節七日，第一天要完全休歇，第八天也要完全休歇。

“你要去，把書珊城所有的猶大人都召集起來，為我禁食三天，就是三日三夜不吃不喝；我和我的婢女也要這樣禁食。然後我就違例進去見王；我若是死，就死吧。”

他們從遠處舉目觀望，竟認不出他來，就放聲大哭，各自撕裂外袍，向天揚起塵土，落在自己頭上。

“你要告訴以色列人：七月十五日是住棚節，要在耶和華面前守這七天的節期。

到那日，主萬軍之耶和華叫人哭泣哀號，剃光頭髮，穿上麻布。

以色列眾人，就是全體人民，又上到伯特利，坐在耶和華面前哀哭，那日禁食直到晚上，然後在耶和華面前獻上燔祭和平安祭。

祭司啊！你們要腰束麻布，並且痛哭。在祭壇侍候的啊！你們要哀號。事奉我的神的啊！你們披上麻布進去過夜吧，因為素祭和奠祭，都從你們的神的殿中止息了。你們要把禁食的日子分別為聖，召開嚴肅會，聚集眾長老和國中所有的居民，到你們的神耶和華的殿裡，向耶和華呼求。

尼尼微人信了（“信了”或譯：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，從大到小，都穿上麻衣。這事傳到尼尼微王那裡，他就起來，離開寶座，脫去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在爐灰中。他又傳諭全尼尼微，說：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准嘗甚麼，不准吃，也不准喝。不論人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要懇切呼求神，悔改，離開惡行，摒棄手中的強暴。

於是約沙法害怕起來，定意要尋求耶和華，就在猶大全地宣告禁食。

七月二十三日，王遣散眾民回家；他們因看見耶和華向大衛、所羅門和他的子民以色列所施的恩惠，心裡都歡喜快樂。

你們要在錫安吹號角，把禁食的日子分別為聖，召開嚴肅會。你們要召集民眾，使會眾分別為聖；招聚老人，聚集孩童，和在懷中吃奶的嬰孩；讓新郎從新房出來，新婦從內室出來。讓事奉耶和華的祭司在聖殿的廊子和祭壇之間哭泣，讓他們說：“耶和華啊！求你憐恤你的子民。不要使你的產業受羞辱，使他們在列國中成為笑談。為甚麼容人在萬民中譏笑說：‘他們的神在哪裡呢？’”
