Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked,

Then Jesus was approached by Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem, who asked,

Then the scribes and Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,

Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked,

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,

The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying,“ He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and“ He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons.”

The scribes and the Pharisees began thinking of the implications, saying,“ Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?”

“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?And you say,‘ Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the offering that is on it is obligated.’You blind men, which is more important, the offering or the altar that sanctifies the offering?Therefore, the one who swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.And the one who swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells in it.And the one who swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self indulgence.You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may also become clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

“ For I say to you that unless your righteousness far surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

saying:“ The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses.

And a great uproar occurred; and some of the scribes of the Pharisaic party stood up and started arguing heatedly, saying,“ We find nothing wrong with this man; suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”

One day He was teaching, and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.

The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying,“ Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?”

The Pharisees and some of the scribes* gathered to Him after they came from Jerusalem,and saw that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unholy hands, that is, unwashed.( For the Pharisees and all the other Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thereby holding firmly to the tradition of the elders;and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they completely cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received as traditions to firmly hold, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, and copper pots.)And the Pharisees and the scribes* asked Him,“ Why do Your disciples not walk in accordance with the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unholy hands?”But He said to them,“ Rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:‘ This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.And in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”He was also saying to them,“ You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother’; and,‘ The one who speaks evil of father or mother, is certainly to be put to death’;but you say,‘ If a person says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban( that is, given to God),’you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother;thereby invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them,“ Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:there is nothing outside the person which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which come out of the person are what defile the person.”
