然務必求之以信、莫存絲毫狐疑。狐疑之人、如海上波濤、因風而起、隨風而轉、漫無定止；

然則吾人不可再為稚子、隨風飄盪、漫無定止、惑於異端、而溺於邪說。

如望乃輝煌之明燈、爾等亦曾瞻仰其光、而極一時之樂矣。

『曠野有人、揚聲而呼：為主清道、正直其途。』應乎是、有如望者施洗於曠野、而傳悛悔之洗禮、用滌宿罪。時猶太全境及耶路撒冷居民、相率出謁如望、自承其罪、而受洗於約但河中。

如望使徒既返、耶穌向眾論如望曰：『曩者爾赴曠野、欲何睹乎？其飄搖風中之蘆葦乎？爾之去也、果欲何睹？將身被錦繡者乎？被華服而酖晏樂者、惟宮中有焉。然則爾之去也、將欲睹先知乎？予曰是矣、然不僅先知而已也。經云：「予遣使爾前、為爾備道、」即斯人也！予實語爾、婦女所生、未有大於如望者也。然天主國中之至小者、視彼猶大。眾與稅吏、咸受洗於如望、聞其言莫不稱頌天主至德；惟法利塞與律學士輩、獨不受其洗、是亦辜負天主之宏謨而已矣。』

爾其深味斯言、三覆思之；蓋有者必見增益、而無者則並其自以為有者、而奪之矣。』

時耶路撒冷與猶太全國、以及約但河一帶之居民。群趨如望、

夫如望之洗、何自而來、自天乎、自人乎？』若輩私議曰：

出遊約但一帶、傳悛悔之洗、用滌宿穢、正如先知意灑雅書所云：「曠野有人、揚聲而呼：為主除道、正直其途；充填空谷、蕩夷山陵；曲者使直陂者使平。普天之下、血氣之倫、咸將親睹、天主救恩！」眾出受洗、如望謂之曰：『蝮類！誰警爾曹以避將臨之怒耶？

耶穌回顧、見其來從、問曰：『何求？』曰：『辣卞何居？』「辣卞」即夫子之謂也。

當吾之存此意念也、決非以輕率出之、亦非徇於私情而定、其後又任意變更計劃、忽爾非其所是、是其所非也。至誠天主、實鑒吾誠。凡吾儕向爾等所許之言、皆非模棱兩可、而徘徊於是非之間者也。

維時、施洗者如望宣道於猶太曠野中曰：『汝其悔悟、天國伊邇。』先知意灑雅所言：『曠野有人、揚聲而呼；為主備道、正直其途；』即斯人也。
