有聲音呼喊著：「要在曠野預備耶和華的道路，在荒漠為我們的神修直大道！一切山谷將被升高，一切山岡將被降低，高高低低的成為平地，崎崎嶇嶇的成為平原。耶和華的榮耀必顯現，凡有血肉的都必一同看見。因為這是耶和華親口說的。」

約翰說：「正如先知以賽亞所說的，我就是在曠野裡呼喊的聲音：『你們當修直主的道。』」

你們自己可以為我見證：我曾經說過『我不是基督，而是奉差派在他前面的。』迎娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的朋友站在那裡，聽到新郎的聲音，就歡喜快樂。這樣，我這喜樂得以滿足了。他必興旺，我必衰微。」那從上面來的，是在萬有之上；那從地而出的，屬於地，而且所說的也屬於地。那從天上來的，是在萬有之上，他見證他所看到的、他所聽到的，可是沒有人接受他的見證。那接受他見證的人，就印證了神是真實的。神所差派的那一位，就說神的話語，因為神不靠著量度賜下聖靈。父愛子，把一切都交在他手裡了。信從子的人，就有永恆的生命；但是不肯信從子的人，見不到生命，而且神的震怒也停留在他身上。

而你——孩子啊！你將被稱為至高者的先知，因為你將走在主的前面，預備他的路，藉著罪得赦免，賜給他的子民救恩的知識。因著我們神憐憫的心腸，黎明的曙光將從高天臨到我們，照亮那些坐在黑暗和死亡陰影中的人，引導我們的腳步進入平安之路。」

他為見證而來，是要為這光做見證，好讓人都藉著他相信。

約翰回答說：「我用水施洗，但有一位站在你們中間，是你們不認識的，他是那在我之後來的，我就是為他解鞋帶也不配。」這些事發生在約旦河對岸的伯大尼，就是約翰施洗的地方。第二天，約翰看見耶穌向他走來，就說：「看哪，神的羔羊，除去世人罪孽的！這一位就是我所說的『那在我之後來的人，已成為在我前面的，因為在我之前他就存在了。』我以前也不認識他，但為了讓他向以色列顯明，所以我來用水施洗。」約翰又見證說：「我看到聖靈好像鴿子從天上降臨，停留在他身上。我以前也不認識他，可是那派我用水施洗的對我說：『如果你看見聖靈降臨在誰身上，又停留在誰身上，誰就是用聖靈施洗的那一位。』我看到了，就見證：這一位就是神的兒子。」過了一天，約翰和他的兩個門徒又站在那裡。約翰看著耶穌走過，就說：「看哪，神的羔羊！」

在曠野有聲音呼喊著：『你們當預備主的道，當修直他的路！』」

他將使許多以色列子民歸向主——他們的神。他將藉著以利亞的靈和能力，在主的面前先行，使父親的心轉向兒女，使悖逆的人轉向義人的智慧，好為主準備一群預備好了的子民。」

這約翰就是藉著先知以賽亞所說的那個人。以賽亞說：「在曠野有聲音呼喊著：『你們當預備主的道，當修直他的路！』」

他必使父親的心轉向兒女，使兒女的心轉向他們的父親，以免我來擊打這地、施行命定的滅絕。」

耶和華說：「築起，築起！預備道路！移除我子民路上的絆腳石！」

通過，通過城門！預備子民的道路！築起，築起大道！清除石頭，為萬民高舉旗幟！
