They posed this question:“ Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.

and they questioned Him, saying,“ Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife, and he is childless, that his brother is to marry the wife and raise up children for his brother.

saying:“ Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies, having a wife, and he dies without children, his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man’s brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

“ Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother has a wife, and dies childless, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.

Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

They asked him,“ Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, that man must marry the widow and father children for his brother.

『弟兄們住在一起，他們中間若死了一個，沒有兒子，死者的妻不可出嫁外人；她丈夫的兄弟要向她盡做丈夫的兄弟的本分、娶她為妻，進去找她。她所生的長子要立起來、接替那死去的兄弟的名分，免得他兄弟的名從以色列中被塗抹。那人若不願意娶她兄弟的妻，他兄弟的妻就要上城門長老們那裏說：「我丈夫的兄弟不肯在以色列中為他兄弟立名，不情願向我盡做丈夫的兄弟的本分。」那麼他本城的長老就要把那人叫來，對他講話；他若立定主意說：「我不樂意娶她」；那麼他兄弟的妻就要當着長老們眼前湊上前到那人跟前，從他腳上脫去了鞋，吐唾沫在他臉上，應時說：「那不為他兄弟建立家室的、人都要這樣待他。」這樣，那人在以色列中便要名為「鞋被脫掉者的家」。

猶大對俄南說：『你要進去找你哥哥的妻子，向她盡你做弟弟的本分，為你哥哥樹立後裔。』

猶大心裏說：恐怕示拉也死，像他兩個哥哥一樣，就對兒媳婦他瑪說：『你要在你父親家裏守寡，等我兒子示拉長大了。』他瑪就去住在她父親家裏。

猶大承認說：『她理直、我輸她，因為我沒有將她給了我的兒子示拉』；從此猶大就不再和她同房了。

拿俄米說：『我女兒們哪，回去吧！為甚麼要跟我去呢？難道我腹中還有兒子可以給你們做丈夫麼？我女兒們哪，回去吧；去吧；我已經老了、不能再有丈夫。就使我說我還有希望今夜竟有丈夫，也竟能生兒子，
