I called on your name, Lord, from the depths of the pit.

Lord, I called out to you. I called out from the bottom of the pit.

I called on Your name, O Lord, From the lowest pit.

I called upon thy name, O Jehovah, out of the lowest dungeon.

I have called on your name, O LORD, from the deepest pit.

So the jailer put them into the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!The jailer woke up to see the prison doors wide open. He assumed the prisoners had escaped, so he drew his sword to kill himself.But Paul shouted to him,“ Stop! Don’t kill yourself! We are all here!”

Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow.Then I called on the name of the Lord:“ Please, Lord, save me!”

So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it.

So the Lord sent the commanders of the Assyrian armies, and they took Manasseh prisoner. They put a ring through his nose, bound him in bronze chains, and led him away to Babylon.But while in deep distress, Manasseh sought the Lord his God and sincerely humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.

From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help.Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer.

But I keep praying to you, Lord, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation.Rescue me from the mud; don’t let me sink any deeper! Save me from those who hate me, and pull me from these deep waters.Don’t let the floods overwhelm me, or the deep waters swallow me, or the pit of death devour me.Answer my prayers, O Lord, for your unfailing love is wonderful. Take care of me, for your mercy is so plentiful.Don’t hide from your servant; answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble!Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies.

When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. Wherever I go, my enemies have set traps for me.I look for someone to come and help me, but no one gives me a passing thought! No one will help me; no one cares a bit what happens to me.Then I pray to you, O Lord. I say,“ You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life.Hear my cry, for I am very low. Rescue me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me.Bring me out of prison so I can thank you. The godly will crowd around me, for you are good to me.”

He said,“ I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves.Then I said,‘ O Lord, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.’

The grave wrapped its ropes around me; death laid a trap in my path.But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
