約書亞對呂便人、迦得人，和瑪拿西半支派的人說：「你們要追念耶和華的僕人摩西所吩咐你們的話說：『耶和華－你們的神使你們得享平安，也必將這地賜給你們。』你們的妻子、孩子，和牲畜都可以留在約旦河東、摩西所給你們的地；但你們中間一切大能的勇士都要帶着兵器在你們的弟兄前面過去，幫助他們，等到耶和華使你們的弟兄像你們一樣得享平安，並且得着耶和華－你們神所賜他們為業之地，那時才可以回你們所得之地，承受為業，就是耶和華的僕人摩西在約旦河東、向日出之地所給你們的。」他們回答約書亞說：「你所吩咐我們行的，我們都必行；你所差遣我們去的，我們都必去。我們從前在一切事上怎樣聽從摩西，現在也必照樣聽從你；惟願耶和華－你的神與你同在，像與摩西同在一樣。無論甚麼人違背你的命令，不聽從你所吩咐他的一切話，就必治死他。你只要剛強壯膽！」

從基列到亞嫩谷，以谷中為界，直到亞捫人交界的雅博河，我給了呂便人和迦得人，又將亞拉巴和靠近約旦河之地，從基尼烈直到亞拉巴海，就是鹽海，並毗斯迦山根東邊之地，都給了他們。「那時，我吩咐你們說：『耶和華－你們的神已將這地賜給你們為業；你們所有的勇士都要帶着兵器，在你們的弟兄以色列人前面過去。但你們的妻子、孩子、牲畜（我知道你們有許多的牲畜）可以住在我所賜給你們的各城裏。等到你們弟兄在約旦河那邊，也得耶和華－你們神所賜給他們的地，又使他們得享平安，與你們一樣，你們才可以回到我所賜給你們為業之地。』

摩西對他們說：「你們若這樣行，在耶和華面前帶着兵器出去打仗，所有帶兵器的人都要在耶和華面前過約旦河，等他趕出他的仇敵，那地被耶和華制伏了，然後你們可以回來，向耶和華和以色列才為無罪，這地也必在耶和華面前歸你們為業。倘若你們不這樣行，就得罪耶和華，要知道你們的罪必追上你們。如今你們口中所出的，只管去行，為你們的婦人孩子造城，為你們的羊羣壘圈。」迦得子孫和呂便子孫對摩西說：「僕人要照我主所吩咐的去行。我們的妻子、孩子、羊羣，和所有的牲畜都要留在基列的各城。但你的僕人，凡帶兵器的，都要照我主所說的話，在耶和華面前過去打仗。」於是，摩西為他們囑咐祭司以利亞撒和嫩的兒子約書亞，並以色列眾支派的族長，說：「迦得子孫和呂便子孫，凡帶兵器在耶和華面前去打仗的，若與你們一同過約旦河，那地被你們制伏了，你們就要把基列地給他們為業。
