Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him,“ We are not blind too, are we?”

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked,“ What? Are we blind too?”

Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him,“ Are we blind also?”

Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said unto him, Are we also blind?

Because you say,“ I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,

Then the disciples came and* said to Him,“ Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?”But He answered and said,“ Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted.Leave them alone; they are blind guides of blind people. And if a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness,a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, possessing in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth—you, therefore, who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one is not to steal, do you steal?You who say that one is not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who loathe idols, do you rob temples?

The Pharisees then replied to them,“ You have not been led astray too, have you?Not one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!”Nicodemus( the one who came to Him before, being one of them)* said to them,“ Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?”They answered and said to him,“ You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”

“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?And you say,‘ Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the offering that is on it is obligated.’You blind men, which is more important, the offering or the altar that sanctifies the offering?Therefore, the one who swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.And the one who swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells in it.And the one who swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self indulgence.You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may also become clean.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

They answered him,“ You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?” So they put him out.

But the Lord said to him,“ Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but your inside is full of greed and wickedness.You foolish ones, did He who made the outside not make the inside also?But give that which is within as a charitable gift, and then all things are clean for you.“ But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue, and every kind of garden herb, and yet you ignore justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces.Woe to you! For you are like unseen tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.”One of the lawyers* said to Him in reply,“ Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.”But He said,“ Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.For this reason also, the wisdom of God said,‘ I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation,from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many subjects,plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.
