The Jews then were astonished, saying,“ How has this man become learned, not having been educated?”

The Jews there were amazed and asked,“ How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”

The Jews there were amazed. They asked,“ How did this man learn so much without being taught?”

The Jews therefore marveled, saying,“ How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?”

The people were surprised when they heard him.“ How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.

Then the Jews were amazed and said,“ How is this man so learned, since he hasn’t been trained?”

And the Jews marveled, saying,“ How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”

The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

Then the Jews were amazed and said,“ How does He know the Scriptures, since He hasn’t been trained?”

And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

Then the Jewish leaders were astonished and said,“ How does this man know so much when he has never had formal instruction?”

The Jews therefore marveled, saying,“ How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”

And all the people were speaking well of Him, and admiring the gracious words which were coming from His lips; and yet they were saying,“ Is this not Joseph’s son?”

The officers answered,“ Never has a man spoken in this way!”

And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.

And He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, with the result that they were astonished, and said,“ Where did this man acquire this wisdom and these miraculous powers?

And hearing this, they were amazed; and they left Him and went away.

Then Amos replied to Amaziah,“ I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs.But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me,‘ Go prophesy to My people Israel.’

This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him,“ Who are you?”

He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief cornerstone.And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”

While Paul was stating these things in his defense, Festus* said in a loud voice,“ Paul, you are out of your mind! Your great learning is driving you insane.”

And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying,“ Where did this man learn these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?” And they took offense at Him.

When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.

They were amazed and astonished, saying,“ Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,Cretans and Arabs— we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty deeds of God.”And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another,“ What does this mean?”But others were jeering and saying,“ They are full of sweet wine!”

When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching;for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
