“‘ Cut off your hair and throw it away; take up a lament on the barren heights, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned this generation that is under his wrath.

The Lord says to the people of Jerusalem,“ Cut off your hair. Throw it away. Sing a song of sadness on the bare hilltops. I am very angry with you. I have turned my back on you. I have deserted you.

“‘ Cut off your hair and cast it away; raise a lamentation on the bare heights, for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.’

Shave your head in mourning, and weep alone on the mountains. For the Lord has rejected and forsaken this generation that has provoked his fury.’

Cut off the hair of your sacred vow and throw it away. Raise up a dirge on the barren heights, for the LORD has rejected and abandoned the generation under his wrath.’

Rich and poor alike will die in this land. They will not be buried or mourned. People will not cut their bodies or shave off their hair to show their grief for them.

For all of them will shave their heads in mourning. They will all cut off their beards to show their sorrow. They will all make gashes in their hands. They will all put on sackcloth.

They went up to the temple, the people of Dibon went up to the high places to lament. Because of what happened to Nebo and Medeba, Moab wails. Every head is shaved bare, every beard is trimmed off.In their streets they wear sackcloth; on their roofs and in their town squares all of them wail, they fall down weeping.

The LORD who rules over all told me to say to this people,“ Take note of what I say. Call for the women who mourn for the dead! Summon those who are the most skilled at it!”I said,“ Indeed, let them come quickly and sing a song of mourning for us. Let them wail loudly until tears stream from our own eyes and our eyelids overflow with water.For the sound of wailing is soon to be heard in Zion. They will wail,‘ We are utterly ruined! We are completely disgraced! For our houses have been torn down and we must leave our land.’”I said,“ So now, you wailing women, hear what the LORD says. Open your ears to the words from his mouth. It has taken away our children who play in the streets. It has taken away our young men who gather in the city squares.’

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

The people of Gaza will shave their heads in mourning. The people of Ashkelon will be struck dumb. How long will you gash yourselves to show your sorrow, you who remain of Philistia’s power?

A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then he left them and went away.

His people have been unfaithful to him; they have not acted like his children– this is their sin. They are a perverse and deceitful generation.

But he answered them,“ An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

So the LORD rejected all of Israel’s descendants; he humiliated them and handed them over to robbers, until he had thrown them from his presence.

“ And you, sing a lament for the princes of Israel,

Next I eradicated the three shepherds in one month, for I ran out of patience with them and, indeed, they detested me as well.I then said,“ I will not shepherd you. What is to die, let it die, and what is to be eradicated, let it be eradicated. As for those who survive, let them eat each other’s flesh!”

I tell you the truth, this generation will be held responsible for all these things!

“ Son of man, sing a lament for the king of Tyre, and say to him,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says:“‘ You were the sealer of perfection, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

With many other words he testified and exhorted them saying,“ Save yourselves from this perverse generation!”
