那时有古实人谢拉率领一百万军队，战车三百辆，前来攻打犹大人；他来到了玛利沙。

撒母耳对扫罗说：“你为什么搅扰我，把我招上来呢？”扫罗说：“我非常苦恼，非利士人正在攻打我，神又离开了我，不再藉着先知或异梦回答我。所以我请你上来，指示我应该怎样行。”

那时，出入的人都没有平安，因为各国的居民都遭遇动乱。

后来，摩押人、亚扪人和一些米乌尼人（按照《马索拉文本》，“米乌尼人”作“亚扪人”；现参照《七十士译本》的一些文本翻译；参代下26:7），一同来攻击约沙法。有人来向约沙法报告说：“从海的对岸，就是从以东（按照《马索拉文本》的绝大部分文本，“以东”作“亚兰”，大概是手民之误﹔两者在原文非常相似﹐但按地理应作“以东”），有大军前来攻击你；现在他们在哈洗逊．他玛。”哈洗逊．他玛就是隐．基底。

在那些国中，你必不得安息，也没有脚掌歇息的地方；耶和华却必使你在那里心中发颤，眼目憔悴，精神颓废。

以色列人又行了耶和华看为恶的事，耶和华就使摩押王伊矶伦强盛起来，欺压以色列人，因为他们行了耶和华看为恶的事。伊矶伦集合了亚扪人和亚玛力人，前来击败了以色列人，占领了棕树城。

每逢以色列人撒种以后，米甸人、亚玛力人和东方人都上来，欺压他们；对着他们安营，毁坏那地的出产，直到迦萨一带，他们没有留下牛、羊和驴，没有给以色列人留下一点养生之物。因为他们带着牲畜和帐棚上来，像蝗虫那么多；他们来的人和骆驼无数，进入境内，毁坏全地。
