this is the word the Lord has spoken against him:“ Virgin Daughter Zion despises and mocks you. Daughter Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee.

So here is the message the Lord has spoken against him. The Lord is telling him,“‘ “You will not win the battle over Zion. Its people hate you and make fun of you. The people of Jerusalem lift up their heads proudly as you run away.

this is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him:“‘ She despises you, she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wags her head behind you— the daughter of Jerusalem.

this is the word the LORD has spoken against him: Virgin Daughter Zion despises you and scorns you; Daughter Jerusalem shakes her head behind your back.

this is the word that the Lord has spoken against him:“ She has shown contempt for you and derided you, The virgin daughter of Zion; The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head behind you!

this is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning him:“ The virgin, the daughter of Zion, Has despised you, laughed you to scorn; The daughter of Jerusalem Has shaken her head behind your back!

this is the word which Jehovah hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

this is the word the Lord has spoken against him: Virgin Daughter Zion despises you and scorns you: Daughter Jerusalem shakes her head behind your back.

This[ is] the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee,[ and] laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

this is what the LORD says about him:“ The virgin daughter Zion despises you– she makes fun of you; daughter Jerusalem shakes her head after you.

this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you.

What can I say about you? Who has ever seen such sorrow? O daughter of Jerusalem, to what can I compare your anguish? O virgin daughter of Zion, how can I comfort you? For your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can heal you?

The Lord says,“ Shout and rejoice, O beautiful Jerusalem, for I am coming to live among you.

Save me so I can praise you publicly at Jerusalem’s gates, so I can rejoice that you have rescued me.

Now, Jeremiah, say this to them:“ Night and day my eyes overflow with tears. I cannot stop weeping, for my virgin daughter— my precious people— has been struck down and lies mortally wounded.

Beautiful Jerusalem stands abandoned like a watchman’s shelter in a vineyard, like a lean to in a cucumber field after the harvest, like a helpless city under siege.

Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!

Silence their lying lips— those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly.

Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.

“ The Lord has treated my mighty men with contempt. At his command a great army has come to crush my young warriors. The Lord has trampled his beloved city like grapes are trampled in a winepress.

“ Huddle together, you nations, and be terrified. Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, but you will be crushed! Yes, prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!Call your councils of war, but they will be worthless. Develop your strategies, but they will not succeed. For God is with us!”

“ Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.David replied to the Philistine,“ You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies— the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

Say to the nations far and wide:“ Get ready for war! Call out your best warriors. Let all your fighting men advance for the attack.Hammer your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Train even your weaklings to be warriors.Come quickly, all you nations everywhere. Gather together in the valley.” And now, O Lord, call out your warriors!“ Let the nations be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I, the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all.

I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!

“ The virgin Israel has fallen, never to rise again! She lies abandoned on the ground, with no one to help her up.”

The Lord has sent this message to every land:“ Tell the people of Israel,‘ Look, your Savior is coming. See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.’”

“ Tell the people of Jerusalem,‘ Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.’”

Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying,“ Is this the one who relies on the Lord? Then let the Lord save him! If the Lord loves him so much, let the Lord rescue him!”

The enemy stops at Nob for the rest of that day. He shakes his fist at beautiful Mount Zion, the mountain of Jerusalem.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! InterludeA river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High.God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it.The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts!The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude

The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.“ Let us break their chains,” they cry,“ and free ourselves from slavery to God.”But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them.

The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.

He says,“ Never again will you rejoice, O daughter of Sidon, for you have been crushed. Even if you flee to Cyprus, you will find no rest.”
