But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.”

Then one of them said,“ I will return to you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will have a son!” Sarah was listening to this conversation from the tent.

The Lord appeared to Isaac and said,“ Do not go down to Egypt, but do as I tell you.Live here as a foreigner in this land, and I will be with you and bless you. I hereby confirm that I will give all these lands to you and your descendants, just as I solemnly promised Abraham, your father.I will cause your descendants to become as numerous as the stars of the sky, and I will give them all these lands. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.I will do this because Abraham listened to me and obeyed all my requirements, commands, decrees, and instructions.”

She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would.And Abraham named their son Isaac.

And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

And even when he reached the land God promised him, he lived there by faith— for he was like a foreigner, living in tents. And so did Isaac and Jacob, who inherited the same promise.

For he made this promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever.”

“ I wish you would hide me in the grave and forget me there until your anger has passed. But mark your calendar to think of me again!

So Jacob set out for Egypt with all his possessions. And when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.

I am the God of your father— the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.

Then he blessed Joseph and said,“ May the God before whom my grandfather Abraham and my father, Isaac, walked— the God who has been my shepherd all my life, to this very day,

Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are their ancestors, and Christ himself was an Israelite as far as his human nature is concerned. And he is God, the one who rules over everything and is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly members of God’s people!

For God had promised,“ I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

He has been merciful to our ancestors by remembering his sacred covenant—

He replied,“ The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.

So she turned to Abraham and demanded,“ Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son, Isaac. I won’t have it!”This upset Abraham very much because Ishmael was his son.But God told Abraham,“ Do not be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.
