Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble, And dry grass collapses in the flame, So their root will become like rot, and their blossom blow away like dust; For they have rejected the Law of the Lord of armies, And discarded the word of the Holy One of Israel. For this reason the anger of the Lord has burned against His people, And He has stretched out His hand against them and struck them. And the mountains quaked, and their corpses lay like refuse in the middle of the streets. Despite all this, His anger is not spent, But His hand is still stretched out.

Isaiah 5:1-6
Let me sing now for my beloved A song of my beloved about His vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a fertile hill.He dug it all around, cleared it of stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. And He built a tower in the middle of it, And also carved out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones.“ And now, you inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard. What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?So now let Me tell you what I am going to do to My vineyard: I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed; I will break down its wall and it will become trampled ground.I will lay it waste; It will not be pruned nor hoed, But briars and thorns will come up. I will also command the clouds not to rain on it.”

‘ But like the bad figs which cannot be eaten due to rottenness,’ indeed, this is what the Lord says,‘ so will I give up Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and the ones who live in the land of Egypt.I will make them an object of terror and an evil for all the kingdoms of the earth, as a disgrace and a proverb, a taunt and a curse in all the places where I will scatter them. And I will send the sword, the famine, and the plague upon them until they are eliminated from the land which I gave to them and their forefathers.’ ”

“ As for the smoking sacrifices that you burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your forefathers, your kings and your leaders, and the people of the land, did the Lord not remember them, and did all of this not come into His mind?So the Lord was no longer able to endure it, because of the evil of your deeds, because of the abominations which you have committed; so your land has become a place of ruins, an object of horror, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as it is this day.Since you have burned sacrifices and have sinned against the Lord and not obeyed the voice of the Lord nor walked in His Law, His statutes, or His testimonies, therefore this disaster has happened to you, as it has this day.”Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women,“ Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt! This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:‘ As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying,“ We will certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” By all means fulfill your vows, and be sure to perform your vows!’In return, hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are living in the land of Egypt:‘ Behold, I have sworn by My great name,’ says the Lord,‘ that My name shall never be invoked again by the mouth of anyone of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying,“ As the Lord God lives.”Behold, I am watching over them for harm and not for good, and all the people of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will meet their end by the sword or by famine until they are completely gone.

and say to the forest of the Negev,‘ Hear the word of the Lord: this is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am going to kindle a fire in you, and it will consume every green tree in you, as well as every dry tree; the blazing flame will not go out and the entire surface from south to north will be scorched by it.And all mankind will see that I, the Lord, have kindled it; it will not go out.” ’ ”

Ezekiel 17:3-10
saying,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ A great eagle with great wings, long pinions, and a full plumage of many colors came to Lebanon and took away the top of the cedar. He broke off the topmost of its young twigs and brought it to a land of merchants; he set it in a city of traders. He also took from the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil, a meadow beside abundant waters; he set it like a willow. Then it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine with its branches turned toward him, but its roots remained under it. So it became a vine and produced shoots and sent out branches.“ But there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage; and behold, this vine turned its roots toward him and sent out its branches toward him from the beds where it was planted, so that he might water it.It was planted in good soil beside abundant waters, so that it would produce branches and bear fruit, and become a splendid vine.” ’Say,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers— so that all its sprouting shoots wither? And neither by great strength nor by many people can it be raised from its roots again.Behold, though it is planted, will it thrive? Will it not completely wither as soon as the east wind strikes it— wither on the beds where it grew?” ’ ”
