In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

All the Jews were very sad. They didn’t eat anything. They wept and cried. Many of them put on the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They were lying down in ashes. They did all these things in every territory where the king’s order and law had been sent.

And in every province, wherever the king’s command and his decree reached, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting and weeping and lamenting, and many of them lay in sackcloth and ashes.

And as news of the king’s decree reached all the provinces, there was great mourning among the Jews. They fasted, wept, and wailed, and many people lay in burlap and ashes.

There was great mourning among the Jewish people in every province where the king’s command and edict reached. They fasted, wept, and lamented, and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

我便以禁食麻布爐灰咬緊牙根而向主上帝尋求、禱告、懇求。

所以我說：『你們請轉眼、別注視着我！讓我苦苦地哭一頓吧！不要因我眾民之毁滅，你們就急地來安慰我。』

我所選擇、使人刻苦自己的日子難道是這樣的禁食麼？難道只是叫人垂頭像燈心草，拿麻布和爐灰當床鋪麼？難道你要把這樣叫做禁食，作為使永恆主悅納的日子麼？我所選擇的真禁食豈不是以下這些行為：

當那日子、主萬軍之永恆主叫人哀哭號咷，頭上光禿，腰束麻布；

當亞哈隨魯的日子——這是那位從印度到古實統治一百二十七省的亞哈隨魯——

於是王對僕役們說：「把他捆起來，腳和手，丟出外邊的黑暗裏；在那裏有哀哭和切齒。」

『你去招聚書珊所找得着的一切猶大人為我禁食，不喫不喝三天，就是三晝三夜；我也這樣，我和我的侍女也要禁食；這樣，我就不照法令進去見王；我若死，就死罷。』

使者到了掃羅住的基比亞，將這些話說給人民聽，眾民就都放聲而哭。

他來到的時候，以利正坐在城門旁一個位子上觀望着道路，因為他的心正為上帝的櫃在發顫。那人進城來報信，全城都喊叫起來。以利聽見嚷叫的聲音，就說：『這喧嚷的聲音是怎麼回事呢？』那人急忙來向以利報信。

希西家王聽見，就撕裂衣服，披上麻布，進了永恆主的殿。他打發管家以利亞敬、祕書舍伯那和祭司中的長老、都披上麻布，去見亞摩斯的兒子、神言人以賽亞；對他說：『希西家這麼說：「今日是有急難、受責罰、受侮慢的日子；就如嬰兒臨到生產的關頭，卻沒有力量生出來。

丟在火爐裏；在那裏必有哀哭和切齒。

正月十三日王的書記們就被召了來，照哈曼一切所吩咐的，寫下了勅令、給王的眾藩臣，給一省一省的巡撫，給一族一族的首領；一省一省用自己的文字，一族一族用自己的方言；奉亞哈隨魯王的名寫的，又用王的打印戒指蓋上了印的。

把這無用的奴僕趕到外面的黑暗裏！在那裏必有哀哭和切齒。」
