The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom.

The young man might have come from prison to become king. Or he might have been born poor within the kingdom but still became king.

For he went from prison to the throne, though in his own kingdom he had been born poor.

Such a youth could rise from poverty and succeed. He might even become king, though he has been in prison.

Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and they quickly brought him from the dungeon. He shaved, changed his clothes, and went to Pharaoh.

He sets the lowly on high, and mourners are lifted to safety.

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the garbage pilein order to seat them with nobles— with the nobles of His people.

During Jehoiakim’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon attacked. Jehoiakim became his vassal for three years, and then he turned and rebelled against him.The Lord sent Chaldean, Aramean, Moabite, and Ammonite raiders against Jehoiakim. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord He had spoken through His servants the prophets.

They slaughtered Zedekiah’s sons before his eyes. Finally, the king of Babylon blinded Zedekiah, bound him in bronze chains, and took him to Babylon.

On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Judah’s King Jehoiachin, in the year Evil-merodach became king of Babylon, he pardoned King Jehoiachin of Judah and released him from prison.He spoke kindly to him and set his throne over the thrones of the kings who were with him in Babylon.So Jehoiachin changed his prison clothes, and he dined regularly in the presence of the king of Babylon for the rest of his life.As for his allowance, a regular allowance was given to him by the king, a portion for each day, for the rest of his life.

“ So now, let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.Let Pharaoh do this: Let him appoint overseers over the land and take a fifth of the harvest of the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.Let them gather all the excess food during these good years that are coming. Under Pharaoh’s authority, store the grain in the cities, so they may preserve it as food.The food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine that will take place in the land of Egypt. Then the country will not be wiped out by the famine.”The proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants.Then Pharaoh said to his servants,“ Can we find anyone like this, a man who has God’s spirit in him?”So Pharaoh said to Joseph,“ Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as intelligent and wise as you are.You will be over my house, and all my people will obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”Pharaoh also said to Joseph,“ See, I am placing you over all the land of Egypt.”Pharaoh removed his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, clothed him with fine linen garments, and placed a gold chain around his neck.He had Joseph ride in his second chariot, and servants called out before him,“ Abrek!” So he placed him over all the land of Egypt.Pharaoh said to Joseph,“ I am Pharaoh, but no one will be able to raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt without your permission.”

While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven:“ King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared that the kingdom has departed from you.

The Lord’s anointed, the breath of our life, was captured in their traps. We had said about him,“ We will live under his protection among the nations.”

Jehoahaz was 23 years old when he became king and reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah, from Libnah.He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight just as his ancestors had done.Pharaoh Neco imprisoned him at Riblah in the land of Hamath to keep him from reigning in Jerusalem, and he imposed on the land a fine of 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold.Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Jehoahaz and went to Egypt, and he died there.

Jehoiachin king of Judah, along with his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his officials, surrendered to the king of Babylon. So the king of Babylon took him captive in the eighth year of his reign.

He seized the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and the treasuries of the royal palace. He took everything. He took all the gold shields that Solomon had made.King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place and committed them into the care of the captains of the royal escorts who guarded the entrance to the king’s palace.
