I also said to myself,“ God tests human beings. He does this so they can see that in certain ways they are like animals.

又思世人行事、上帝察之、欲人知異於禽獸者幾希。

我又自思曰、世事如是乃緣人之故、蓋天主欲以試人、使人知人與獸無異、

I also said to myself,“ As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals.

I said in my heart with regard to the children of man that God is testing them that they may see that they themselves are but beasts.

I also thought about the human condition— how God proves to people that they are like animals.

I said to myself,“ This happens so that God may test the children of Adam and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

I said to myself regarding the sons of mankind,“ God is testing them in order for them to see that they are as animals, they to themselves.”

I said in my heart,“ Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.”

I said in my heart, It is because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are but as beasts.

I said to myself,“ This happens concerning people, so that God may test them and they may see for themselves that they are like animals.”

I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

I also thought to myself,“ It is for the sake of people, so God can clearly show them that they are like animals.

I said in my heart,“ As for the sons of men, God tests them, so that they may see that they themselves are like animals.

I didn’t have any sense. I didn’t know anything. I acted like a wild animal toward you.

People have to die once. After that, God will judge them.

The Lord God said to Adam,“ You listened to your wife’s suggestion. You ate fruit from the tree I warned you about. I said,‘ You must not eat its fruit.’“ So I am putting a curse on the ground because of what you did. All the days of your life you will have to work hard. It will be painful for you to get food from the ground.You will eat plants from the field, even though the ground produces thorns and prickly weeds.You will have to work hard and sweat a lot to produce the food you eat. You were made out of the ground. You will return to it when you die. You are dust, and you will return to dust.”

What if he put up with them to show the riches of his glory to other people? Those other people are the ones he shows his mercy to. He made them to receive his glory.

But they will die, like their people of long ago. They will never again see the light of life.People who have riches but don’t understand are like the animals. They die.

Yet you sweep people away, and they die. They are like new grass that grows in the morning.In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it’s all dried up.Your anger destroys us. Your burning anger terrifies us.You have put our sins right in front of you. You have placed our secret sins where you can see them clearly.You have been angry with us all of our days. We groan as we come to the end of our lives.We live to be about 70. Or we may live to be 80, if we stay healthy. But even our best days are filled with trouble and sorrow. The years quickly pass, and we are gone.If only we knew the power of your anger! It’s as great as the respect we should have for you.Teach us to realize how short our lives are. Then our hearts will become wise.

You are the one I’ve really sinned against. I’ve done what is evil in your sight. So you are right when you sentence me. You are fair when you judge me.

These people speak evil about things they don’t understand. They are like wild animals who can’t think. Instead, they do what comes naturally to them. They are born only to be caught and destroyed. Just like animals, these people too will die.

Human beings have only a few days to live. Their lives are full of trouble.They grow like flowers, and then they dry up. They are like shadows that quickly disappear.“ God, do you even notice them? Will you let them appear in your court?Who can bring what is pure from something that isn’t pure? No one!

God, I’m sure you will make them slip and fall. You will throw them down and destroy them.It will happen very suddenly. A terrible death will take them away completely.

So he’ll certainly find fault with human beings. After all, they are evil and sinful. They drink up evil as if it were water.

They are like sheep and will end up in the grave. Death will be their shepherd. But when honest people come to power, a new day will dawn. The bodies of sinners will waste away in the grave. They will end up far away from their princely houses.

“ Would you dare to claim that I am not being fair? Would you judge me in order to make yourself seem right?

Not at all! God is true, even if every human being is a liar. It is written,“ You are right when you sentence me. You are fair when you judge me.”( Psalm 51:4)

Even though people may be very rich, they don’t live on and on. They are like the animals. They die.

It is written,“ All people are like grass. All their glory is like the flowers in the field. The grass dries up. The flowers fall to the ground.
