The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both.

The eyes of a wise person see things clearly. A person who is foolish lives in darkness. But I finally realized that death catches up with both of them.

The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them.

聰明人面前有智慧，愚昧人卻眼望地極。

他看見智慧人死去，愚昧人和愚頑人一同滅亡，把他們的財產留給別人。

我又看見在日光之下，跑得快的未必得獎，勇士未必戰勝，智慧的未必得糧食，精明的未必致富，博學的未必得人賞識，因為時機和際遇左右眾人。

因為世人所遭遇的與牲畜所遭遇的，都是一樣：這個怎樣死，那個也怎樣死，兩者的氣息都是一樣，所以人並不勝於牲畜。一切都是虛空。

我留心這一切事，並加以闡明：就是義人、智慧人和他們所作的，都在神手裡。臨到他們的一切，無論是愛是恨，人都不領悟。眾人的命運都是一樣的：義人與惡人、好人與壞人、潔淨的與不潔淨的、獻祭的與不獻祭的，所遭遇的都是一樣的；好人怎樣，罪人也怎樣；起誓的怎樣，怕起誓的也怎樣。在日光之下所發生的一切事，有一件令人遺憾的，就是眾人的命運都是一樣的，並且世人的心充滿邪惡，一生心懷狂妄，後來都歸到死人那裡去。

都比金子寶貴，比大量的精金更寶貴；比蜜甘甜，比蜂房滴下來的蜜更甘甜；

於是我說：“智慧勝過武力”，但是那個窮人的智慧被藐視，他的話也沒有人聽從。

那人即使活了一千年，再活一千年，也享受不到甚麼；他們兩者不是都歸一個地方嗎？

精明人的智慧能分辨自己的道路；愚昧人的愚妄卻欺騙自己。

往服喪之家，比往宴樂之家還好，因為死是人人的結局，活人要把這事放在心上。

誰像智慧人，誰知道事情的解釋呢？人的智慧使他容光煥發，使他臉上的戾氣轉消。

智慧人的心向右，愚昧人的心偏左。愚昧人連走路的時候，也顯出無知；他對每一個人表現出他是個愚昧人（“他對每一個人表現出他是個愚昧人”或譯：“他稱每一個人都是愚昧的”）。
