He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.

He gave you manna to eat in the desert. Your people had never even known anything about manna before. The Lord took your pride away. He tested you. He did it so that things would go well with you in the end.

以色列人看見，不知道是甚麼，就彼此對問說：『這是甚麼？』摩西對他們說：『這是永恆主給你們喫的食物。

他使你受苦，任你饑餓，將你和你列祖所不認識的嗎哪賜給你喫，使你知道人活着、不是單靠着食物，人活着、乃是靠着永恆主口裏所出的一切話。

『永恆主以色列的上帝這麼說：猶大流亡的人、我所打發離開這地方到迦勒底人之地去的、我必看他們好，如同這些好的無花果。我必注目好待他們，領他們返回這地；建立他們，必不傾覆；栽植他們，必不拔除。

我們這片刻間輕微的苦難、正為我們作成着高超無量極重無比永世之榮耀呢。

他們呢、是在短暫日子裏照自己以為對的來管教；他呢、卻為了我們的益處、要使我們有分於他的聖善。一切管教、在當時似乎不是喜樂，而是憂愁；以後呢、卻給那些由此而受操練的人結出平安的果子、就是正義的果子、來。

堅心忍受試煉的人是有福的；因為他既被試驗為良好，便可得着生命的華冠，就是上帝應許給愛他的人的。

人仰望永恆主，靜默等候他的救恩，真好啊！人幼年時負軛，真好啊！讓他獨坐無言吧，既是永恆主加在他身上的。讓他口貼塵土吧，或者還有盼望。讓他將腮頰向給擊打的人吧，好使他飽受凌辱。因為永恆主必不永遠屏絕人。因為主雖使人受苦，還要照他豐盛的堅愛施憐憫。因為他並非由衷而使人遭苦難，他並不甘心使人類受苦。

並且我們曉得，凡愛上帝的、就是按他的定旨蒙召的人、上帝在萬事上都和他們同工，來成就有益的事。

這是要叫你們的信心被試驗為及格的、比那經火試驗還能銷滅的金子更寶貴得多多的、可以在耶穌基督顯示之時見為蒙受稱讚榮耀和尊重的。
