人必對曰、緣斯民列祖之主天主、昔導之出伊及、與之立約而民背之、

And the answer will be:“ It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.

Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:

Then men will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,

我曾對我的子民發怒，使我的產業被褻瀆，我把他們交在你的手裡，你卻對他們毫無憐憫。你竟把你的軛，重重壓在老年人的身上。

看哪！耶和華使大地空虛，變為荒涼；他必翻轉地面，使地上的居民四散。人民和祭司，僕人和主人，婢女和主母，購買的和販賣的，借給人和向人借的，放債的和借債的，全都一樣被分散。大地必完全倒空，被劫掠淨盡，這話是耶和華說的。大地悲哀衰殘，世界零落衰殘，地上居高位的人也衰敗了。大地被其上的居民玷污，因為他們犯了律法，違了律例，背了永遠的約。因此，大地被咒詛吞滅，地上的居民要承擔懲罰。因此，地上的居民被焚燒，剩下的人很少。

這新約不像從前我拉他們祖先的手，領他們出埃及地的日子，與他們所立的約；我雖然是他們的丈夫，他們卻違背了我的約。”這是耶和華的宣告。

所有遇見他們的都吞吃他們；他們的敵人說：‘我們沒有罪，因為他們得罪了耶和華，那真正的居所；耶和華是他們列祖的盼望。’

這新約不像從前我拉他們祖先的手，領他們出埃及的日子與他們所立的約。因為他們沒有遵守我的約，我就不理會他們。這是主說的。

護衛長把耶利米提出來，對他說：“耶和華你的神曾說要降這災禍在這地方；現在耶和華使災禍臨到，照他所說的行了；因為你們得罪了耶和華，沒有聽從他的話，所以這事才臨到你們。

必有人說：‘是因為他們離棄了耶和華他們神的約，並且敬拜事奉別神。’”

他說：“我為耶和華萬軍的神大發熱心，因為以色列人背棄了你的約，拆毀了你的祭壇，用刀殺死了你的眾先知，只剩下我一個人，他們還在尋索，要取去我的性命。”耶和華說：“你出來站在山上，在我耶和華面前。”那時，耶和華從那裡經過。在耶和華面前有強烈的大風，山崩石碎，但耶和華不在風中；風過以後有地震，但耶和華也不在地震中；地震過後有火，耶和華也不在火中；火後有低微柔和的聲音。以利亞聽見了，就用自己的外衣蒙著臉，走出來，站在洞口。忽然有聲音向他說：“以利亞啊，你在這裡幹甚麼？”以利亞說：“我為耶和華萬軍的神大發熱心，因為以色列人背棄了你的約，拆毀了你的祭壇，用刀殺了你的眾先知，只剩下我一個人，他們還在尋索，要取去我的性命。”
