“ When the Lord heard your words, He grew angry and swore an oath:

do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My worksfor 40 years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said,“ They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways.”So I swore in My anger,“ They will not enter My rest.”

That’s what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them.So the Lord’s anger burned that day, and He swore an oath:‘ Because they did not follow Me completely, none of the men 20 years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did follow the Lord completely.’The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness 40 years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight was gone.

However, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land I had given them— the most beautiful of all lands, flowing with milk and honey—

The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley was 38 years until the entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.Indeed, the Lord’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp until they had all perished.
