一個生來瘸腿的被人抬來。他天天被放在那叫「美門」的聖殿門口，為要向進聖殿的人乞討。

大家都驚訝不已，彼此談論說：「這是什麼事呢？他帶著權柄和能力命令那些汙靈，它們就出來了！」

他們又驚訝又詫異，說：「看，這些說話的不都是加利利人嗎？

又看見那得了痊癒的人和他們一同站著，就無話可說了，於是命令他們到議會外面去，就彼此商議，說：「我們該怎麼處理這些人呢？藉著他們，確實發生了一個明顯的神蹟，所有住在耶路撒冷的人都清清楚楚；我們也不能否認。

那些猶太人不相信他以前瞎眼而後來得以看見，直等到把他的父母叫來，問他們：「這是你們的兒子嗎？你們說他生來是瞎眼的，現在怎麼能看見呢？」他的父母回答說：「這個人是我們的兒子，而且生來就瞎眼，這些我們知道。至於他現在怎麼能看見，我們就不知道了。是誰開了他的眼睛，我們也不知道。你們問他吧，他已經成年了，他自己會說的。」

官長們又威嚇他們一番，為了民眾的緣故把他們釋放了。官長們找不出任何理由來懲罰他們，因為眾人都為所發生的事不住地榮耀神。實際上，因神蹟而痊癒的那個人已經四十多歲了。

眾人又驚訝又困惑，彼此問：「這是什麼意思呢？」

大家都對神的威榮驚嘆不已。正當大家對耶穌所做的一切感到驚奇的時候，耶穌對他的門徒們說：

耶穌回答：「既不是這個人犯了罪，也不是他的父母犯了罪，而是要讓神的作為顯明在他身上。

原來，父喜愛子，把自己所做的一切都給他看，還要把比這些更大的事給他看，使你們感到驚奇。
