夫吾人既為天主之裔、則不當妄度天主之神性、有類乎人工技巧所琢之金銀玉石。

“ Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone— an image made by human design and skill.

“ Yes, we are God’s children. So we shouldn’t think that God is made out of gold or silver or stone. He isn’t a statue planned and made by clever people.

To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness[ of any thing] that[ is] in heaven above, or that[ is] in the earth beneath, or that[ is] in the water under the earth:

Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it[ is] laid over with gold and silver, and[ there is] no breath at all in the midst of it.But the LORD[ is] in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

To whom will ye liken me, and make[ me] equal, and compare me, that we may be like?They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance,[ and] hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.

Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or[ being] his counsellor hath taught him?With whom took he counsel, and[ who] instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?Behold, the nations[ are] as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.And Lebanon[ is] not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.All nations before him[ are] as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.He that[ is] so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree[ that] will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image,[ that] shall not be moved.

And he received[ them] at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These[ be] thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made,[ even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Because that, when they knew God, they glorified[ him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.They[ are] upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also[ is it] in them to do good.Forasmuch as[ there is] none like unto thee, O LORD; thou[ art] great, and thy name[ is] great in might.Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise[ men] of the nations, and in all their kingdoms,[ there is] none like unto thee.But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock[ is] a doctrine of vanities.Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple[ is] their clothing: they[ are] all the work of cunning[ men].But the LORD[ is] the true God, he[ is] the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

They that make a graven image[ are] all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they[ are] their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image[ that] is profitable for nothing?Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they[ are] of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up;[ yet] they shall fear,[ and] they shall be ashamed together.The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.The carpenter stretcheth out[ his] rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish[ it].Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth[ it], and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth[ it]; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth[ himself], and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:And the residue thereof he maketh a god,[ even] his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth[ it], and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou[ art] my god.They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see;[ and] their hearts, that they cannot understand.And none considereth in his heart, neither[ is there] knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten[ it]: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say,[ Is there] not a lie in my right hand?

Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard[ it].Understand, ye brutish among the people: and[ ye] fools, when will ye be wise?He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
