『人子啊，你要向你本國的子民講話，對他們說：我若使刀劍攻擊哪一地，而那一地的人民從他們範圍內選取了一個人，立為他們的守望者；這守望者見刀劍攻擊那地，他若吹號角警告眾民；凡聽的人聽到了號角聲，若不接受警告，刀劍若來除滅他，那麼流他血的罪就要歸到他自己頭上；號角聲他聽見了，他卻不接受警告，故此流他血的罪要歸到他自己身上；守望者既發出了警告，便可搭救他自己的性命。但那守望者若見刀劍臨到，而不吹號角，以致人民沒有受警告，而刀劍遂來除滅他們中間任何人的性命，那麼這人雖因他自己的罪孽而被除滅，然而流他血的罪我卻要從守望者手裏追討。『所以你，人子啊，我立了你做以色列家的守望者；你若從我口中聽到話語，總要替我警告他們。

在耶斯列有一個守望的人站在譙樓上，看見耶戶的洶湧軍隊一直地來，就說：『我看見一隊洶湧的軍兵。』約蘭說：『領一個騎兵，打發他去迎接他們，說：「平安麼？」』騎馬的就去迎接耶戶，說：『王這麼問說：「平安麼？」』耶戶說：『平安不平安、與你何干？你轉來跟着我吧！』守望人又報告說：『使者到了他們那裏，卻沒有回來。』王又打發第二個騎馬的去；這人到了他們那裏，說：『王這麼問說：「平安麼？」耶戶說：『平安不平安、與你何干？你轉來跟着我吧！』守望人又報告說：『他到了他們那裏，也沒有回來。那趕車的手法很像寧示的孫子耶戶的趕法，趕得很兇猛。』
