亚撒还废除了他祖母玛迦的太后之位，因为她造了可憎的亚舍拉神像。亚撒把她的神像砍倒，放在汲沦溪烧掉。虽然他没有拆毁丘坛，但他一生忠于耶和华。他又把他父亲和他自己所献上的金银和器皿都带到耶和华的殿里。亚撒和以色列王巴沙之间常有争战。以色列王巴沙上来攻打犹大，他修筑拉玛城，企图隔断犹大王亚撒与外界的联系。于是，亚撒把耶和华殿里和王宫库房里剩余的金银交给臣仆，派他们送给大马士革的亚兰王，即他伯利们的儿子、希旬的孙子便·哈达，说：“我们之间应立盟约，像我们的父亲之间立约一样，现在奉上金银为礼，请你取消与以色列王巴沙立的盟约。这样，他就会从我境内退兵。”便·哈达接受了亚撒王的提议，派将领攻打以色列的城邑，攻占了以云、但、亚伯·伯·玛迦、基尼烈全境和拿弗他利全境。巴沙闻讯，就停止修筑拉玛，退回得撒去了。亚撒王令全国的犹大人出动，将巴沙修筑拉玛城的石头和木材搬走，用来修建便雅悯的迦巴和米斯巴。亚撒其他的事迹、功业和他兴建的城邑都记在犹大的列王史上。亚撒年老的时候，患了脚疾。他与祖先同眠后，葬在大卫城他的祖坟里。他儿子约沙法继位。

他在耶路撒冷执政三年，母亲是押沙龙的女儿玛迦。

他将亚舍拉神像从耶和华的殿里搬到耶路撒冷城外汲沦溪旁烧掉，磨成灰撒在平民的坟墓上。

他拆毁祭坛和亚舍拉神像，把偶像磨成粉末，砍掉以色列境内所有的香坛，然后回到耶路撒冷。

若有人再说预言，他的亲生父母必对他说，‘你不得活命，因为你奉耶和华的名说谎。’他说预言的时候，他的亲生父母必把他刺死。

又把他们铸造的牛犊熔化掉，磨成粉末撒在水面上，叫以色列百姓喝。

摩西对他们说：“以色列的上帝耶和华这样说，‘你们各人带着刀，从这个门到那个门，走遍整个营，不论遇见的是兄弟、伙伴还是邻居，只管杀他们。’”利未人便照摩西的话去做。那一天，约有三千人被杀。

亚撒做他的上帝耶和华看为好、视为正的事，拆除外族神明的丘坛和神庙，打碎神柱，砍倒亚舍拉神像，命令犹大人寻求他们祖先的上帝耶和华，遵行祂的律法和诫命。他除掉犹大各城邑的丘坛和香坛，那时国中太平。

“如果你们的兄弟、儿女、爱妻或挚友引诱你们去拜你们和你们祖先都不认识的神明，引诱你们去拜你们周围各族的神明，或在附近或远在天边，你们不可迁就、听从他们，不可怜惜他们，不可放过或包庇他们。

你们要拆毁他们的祭坛，打碎他们的神柱，砍下他们的亚舍拉神像，焚烧他们的偶像。

他推倒犹大各王在亚哈斯楼顶上建造的祭坛，摧毁玛拿西在耶和华殿的两个院子里所筑的祭坛，把它们打碎，把灰丢进汲沦溪。

从今以后，我们不再以貌取人了，虽然我们曾这样看待基督，现在却不再这样看待祂了。

我焚烧了你们铸造的罪恶之物——牛犊像，把它磨成细粉，撒在从山上流下来的溪水中。

为了听从你的话，遵守你的约，他们不畏冒犯父母，舍弃弟兄，抛下儿女。

这时候，耶稣的母亲和弟兄来了，他们站在外面，托人叫耶稣。有许多人围坐在耶稣身边，他们告诉祂说：“看啊！你的母亲和兄弟在外面找你。”耶稣说：“谁是我的母亲？谁是我的弟兄？”然后祂望着周围坐着的人说：“看啊！我的母亲、我的弟兄在这里。凡遵行上帝旨意的人就是我的弟兄、姊妹和母亲。”

祂的亲属听见这个消息，就出来要拉住祂，因为人们说祂疯了。

我要毁灭你们的丘坛，拆掉你们的香坛，把你们的尸体堆在你们毫无气息的神像上。我厌恶你们。

你们要烧毁他们的神像，不可贪图神像上的金银，不可将那些金银据为己有，免得你们因此陷入网罗；因为那是你们的上帝耶和华所憎恶的。不可把可憎之物带到家里，否则你们会像它们一样被毁灭。你们要极其憎恶、厌弃它们，因为它们是当毁灭之物。
