對他說：「不要懼怕！我父掃羅的手必不加害於你；你必作以色列的王，我也作你的宰相。這事我父掃羅知道了。」

押尼珥對以色列長老說：「從前你們願意大衛作王治理你們，現在你們可以照心願而行。因為耶和華曾論到大衛說：『我必藉我僕人大衛的手，救我民以色列脫離非利士人和眾仇敵的手。』」

希律王聽見了，就心裏不安；耶路撒冷合城的人也都不安。他就召齊了祭司長和民間的文士，問他們說：「基督當生在何處？」他們回答說：「在猶太的伯利恆。因為有先知記着，說：猶大地的伯利恆啊，你在猶大諸城中並不是最小的；因為將來有一位君王要從你那裏出來，牧養我以色列民。」

現在你的王位必不長久。耶和華已經尋着一個合他心意的人，立他作百姓的君，因為你沒有遵守耶和華所吩咐你的。」

他伸手攻擊神，以驕傲攻擊全能者，

他們去後，有主的使者向約瑟夢中顯現，說：「起來！帶着小孩子同他母親逃往埃及，住在那裏，等我吩咐你；因為希律必尋找小孩子，要除滅他。」

掃羅向約拿單發怒，對他說：「你這頑梗背逆之婦人所生的，我豈不知道你喜悅耶西的兒子，自取羞辱，以致你母親露體蒙羞嗎？耶西的兒子若在世間活着，你和你的國位必站立不住。現在你要打發人去，將他捉拿交給我；他是該死的。」

希律見自己被博士愚弄，就大大發怒，差人將伯利恆城裏並四境所有的男孩，照着他向博士仔細查問的時候，凡兩歲以裏的，都殺盡了。
