For before these days There were no wages for man nor any hire for beast; There was no peace from the enemy for whoever went out or came in; For I set all men, everyone, against his neighbor.

Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor.

Before the work was started again, there was no pay for the people. And there was no money to rent animals. People could not go about their business safely because of their enemies. I had turned all of them against one another.

“ Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.For I have come to‘ set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’;and‘ a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’

And in those times there was no peace to the one who went out, nor to the one who came in, but great turmoil was on all the inhabitants of the lands.So nation was destroyed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every adversity.But you, be strong and do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!”

Far from the noise of the archers, among the watering places, There they shall recount the righteous acts of the Lord, The righteous acts for His villagers in Israel; Then the people of the Lord shall go down to the gates.

“ Behold, I will send for many fishermen,” says the Lord,“ and they shall fish them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks.

“ You have sown much, and bring in little; You eat, but do not have enough; You drink, but you are not filled with drink; You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; And he who earns wages, Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”Thus says the Lord of hosts:“ Consider your ways!Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord.“ You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts.“ Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
