You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it.

爾以律自誇、而干律以辱上帝乎、

爾誇律法、而自犯法、辱上帝乎、

爾以律法為誇、而自犯律法辱天主乎、

而以法為誇者、豈可明知故犯、以辱天主乎？

You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

You brag about the law. But when you break it, you rob God of his honor!

You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law.

You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God?

You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?

thou who gloriest in the law, through thy transgression of the law dishonorest thou God?

You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

You who boast in the law dishonor God by transgressing the law!

You who glory in the law, do you dishonor God by disobeying the law?

You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him.

“ Yet it isn’t I who will accuse you before the Father. Moses will accuse you! Yes, Moses, in whom you put your hopes.

They are the people of Israel, chosen to be God’s adopted children. God revealed his glory to them. He made covenants with them and gave them his law. He gave them the privilege of worshiping him and receiving his wonderful promises.

Yes, there are great benefits! First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the whole revelation of God.

“‘ How can you say,“ We are wise because we have the word of the Lord,” when your teachers have twisted it by writing lies?These wise teachers will fall into the trap of their own foolishness, for they have rejected the word of the Lord. Are they so wise after all?

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer:‘ I thank you, God, that I am not like other people— cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!

Then they cursed him and said,“ You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

“ Why ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.“ There is only One who is good. But to answer your question— if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”“ Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied:“‘ You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ I’ve obeyed all these commandments,” the young man replied.“ What else must I do?”

Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

Jesus replied,“ What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”The man answered,“‘ You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And,‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’”“ Right!” Jesus told him.“ Do this and you will live!”The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus,“ And who is my neighbor?”

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
