For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.

因是亦不可不輸稅；蓋彼既為天主之有司、課稅亦為其所掌也。

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

That’s also why you pay taxes. The authorities serve God. Ruling takes up all their time.

Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do.

And for this reason you pay taxes, since the authorities are God’s servants, continually attending to these tasks.

For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.

Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said,“ Caesar’s.”He said to them,“ Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”But Jesus, aware of their malice, said,“ Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.And Jesus said to them,“ Whose likeness and inscription is this?”They said,“ Caesar’s.” Then he said to them,“ Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

And they came and said to him,“ Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?”But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them,“ Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”And they brought one. And he said to them,“ Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him,“ Caesar’s.”Jesus said to them,“ Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.

When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said,“ Does your teacher not pay the tax?”He said,“ Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying,“ What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?”And when he said,“ From others,” Jesus said to him,“ Then the sons are free.However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Moreover, I make a decree regarding what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for the rebuilding of this house of God. The cost is to be paid to these men in full and without delay from the royal revenue, the tribute of the province from Beyond the River.

And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all these places.Then he would return to Ramah, for his home was there, and there also he judged Israel. And he built there an altar to the Lord.

When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the square,the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose and stood;the princes refrained from talking and laid their hand on their mouth;the voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it approved,because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him.The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.I broke the fangs of the unrighteous and made him drop his prey from his teeth.

Now be it known to the king that if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired.

The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening.When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said,“ What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?”And Moses said to his father-in-law,“ Because the people come to me to inquire of God;when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.”Moses’ father-in-law said to him,“ What you are doing is not good.You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God,and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do.Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.If you do this, God will direct you, you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.”So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.And they judged the people at all times. Any hard case they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves.Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went away to his own country.

And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid.

the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

“ At that time I said to you,‘ I am not able to bear you by myself.The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven.May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife?Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’And you answered me,‘ The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes.And I charged your judges at that time,‘ Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him.You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

And there were those who said,“ We have borrowed money for the king’s tax on our fields and our vineyards.
