God didn’t turn his back on his people. After all, he chose them. Don’t you know what Scripture says about Elijah? He complained to God about Israel.

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory—

For the Lord will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance.

Then Moses became very angry and said to the Lord,“ Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

things known from long ago.

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John—although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.

Listen to me, Lord; hear what my accusers are saying!Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember that I stood before you and spoke in their behalf to turn your wrath away from them.So give their children over to famine; hand them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives be made childless and widows; let their men be put to death, their young men slain by the sword in battle.Let a cry be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring invaders against them, for they have dug a pit to capture me and have hidden snares for my feet.But you, Lord, know all their plots to kill me. Do not forgive their crimes or blot out their sins from your sight. Let them be overthrown before you; deal with them in the time of your anger.

It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

“ Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders.

“ Sir,” the woman said,“ you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?

When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said,“ Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

They told Aaron,‘ Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt— we don’t know what has happened to him!’

For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you warned them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples.

Joseph said to them,“ What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”

Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,
