For forty years I was angry with them, and I said,‘ They are a people whose hearts turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’

歷四十載、我憾當時之人曰、厥心常迷、不識余途兮。

彼世代四十年間、激我厭惡、我曰、彼乃心中偏邪之民、不明我道、

心厭彼逆。垂四十春。中心懷邪。天理不明。

For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said,‘ They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.’

For 40 years I was angry with them. I said,‘ Their hearts are always going astray. They do not know how I want them to live.’

For forty years I loathed that generation and said,“ They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”

For forty years I was disgusted with that generation; I said,“ They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know my ways.”

For forty years I was disgusted with that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways.

For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said,‘ It is a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways.’

Forty years long was I grieved with that generation, And said, It is a people that do err in their heart, And they have not known my ways:

For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation; I said,“ They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know My ways.”

Forty years long was I grieved with[ this] generation, and said, It[ is] a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:

For forty years I was continually disgusted with that generation, and I said,‘ These people desire to go astray; they do not obey my commands.’

Forty long years I was grieved with that generation, and said,“ It is a people that errs in their heart. They have not known my ways.”

And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness?

And by means of many wonders and miraculous signs, he led them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and through the wilderness for forty years.

“ How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge?Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise.“ I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.You ignored my advice and rejected the correction I offered.So I will laugh when you are in trouble! I will mock you when disaster overtakes you—when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone, and anguish and distress overwhelm you.“ When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord.

And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”

There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.So I was angry with them, and I said,‘ Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.

“ The Lord was angry with Israel and made them wander in the wilderness for forty years until the entire generation that sinned in the Lord’s sight had died.

Lord, why have you allowed us to turn from your path? Why have you given us stubborn hearts so we no longer fear you? Return and help us, for we are your servants, the tribes that are your special possession.

So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.

He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

And your children will be like shepherds, wandering in the wilderness for forty years. In this way, they will pay for your faithlessness, until the last of you lies dead in the wilderness.“‘ Because your men explored the land for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years— a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. Then you will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy.’

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
