緣此時以色列人向主爭競、主在其前顯己為聖、故稱此水為米利巴、米利巴譯即爭競之義○

爾在患難時禱告我、我必救爾、爾當尊奉我、

法老相離不遠、以色列人舉目見伊及人來追、懼甚、遂呼籲主、

歷年既久、伊及王卒、以色列人因服役甚苦、太息號呼、因服役呼籲、籲聲上達於天主、

天將旦時、主自雲柱火柱中、俯視伊及軍、亂其隊伍、

論利未則曰、主之土明烏陵、付於敬主之虔誠人、昔在瑪撒、主嘗試之、在米利巴水、主嘗爭之、

因其敬愛我、我必解救之、因其知我名、我必護庇之、其祈求我、我必應允、遭難之時、我必保祐之、拯救之、使之尊貴、

當是日、主拯以色列人脫於伊及人手、以色列人目睹伊及人之屍浮於海濱、以色列人見主向伊及人所施之大能、或作向伊及人所行之大事遂敬畏主、信服主與主之僕摩西、

亞倫必卒而歸其祖、不得入我所賜以色列人之地、緣在米利巴水、爾曹逆我之命、

民與摩西爭曰、以水給我飲、摩西謂之曰、何與我爭、何試主、民在彼渴甚、欲飲水、怨摩西曰、爾何導我出伊及、使我與子及畜因渴而死、摩西籲主曰、我向斯民若何而行、彼幾以石擊我、主命摩西曰、手執昔爾擊河之杖、率以色列長老中數人、由民前而過、我必在何烈磐上對爾立、爾擊磐、水必由磐出、使民得飲、摩西於以色列長老前、如是而行、因以色列人爭於彼、又試主曰、主果在我中否、故摩西稱其地曰瑪撒、瑪撒譯即試之義又稱米利巴、米利巴譯即爭之義○

眾民見雷電交作、角鳴甚厲、山上騰煙、遂退而遠立、謂摩西曰、求爾與我言、我聽之、願天主不與我言、恐我死亡、摩西謂民曰、毋懼、蓋天主降臨為試爾、又為使爾恆敬畏之、俾爾不至犯罪、於是民遠立、惟摩西前、入於密雲、至天主前、
