角聲越來越大，大到極點的時候，摩西就說話，神用雷聲回答摩西。

這就是米利巴水，因為以色列人在那裡與耶和華爭鬧，耶和華在他們中間顯為聖。

在患難的日子，你呼求我。我必搭救你，你也必尊敬我。”

法老走近的時候，以色列人舉目觀看，看見埃及人正追趕過來，就非常懼怕，向耶和華呼求。

過了很久，埃及王死了。以色列人在捆鎖中歎息，他們就呼求，在捆鎖中的呼求達到神那裡。

到了晨更的時候，耶和華透過雲柱火柱向下觀看埃及人的軍兵，並且使埃及人的軍兵大起混亂。

論到利未，他說：“耶和華啊，願你的土明和烏陵屬於對你忠心的人（原文無“耶和華啊”，但因為代名詞“你”是指耶和華而不是利未，所以按文理補上，以免誤導），就是你在瑪撒試驗過的，在米利巴水邊與他們爭論過的。

耶和華說：“因為他戀慕我，我必搭救他；因為他認識我的名，我必保護他。他求告我，我必應允他；他在患難中，我必與他同在；我必拯救他，使他得尊榮。

這樣，耶和華就在那一天把以色列人從埃及人的手裡拯救了出來；以色列人看見埃及人都死在海邊。以色列人看見耶和華向埃及人所顯大能的手，就敬畏耶和華，又信服耶和華和他的僕人摩西。

“亞倫要歸到他本族人那裡去，他必不得進入我賜給以色列人的那地，因為在米利巴水的事上，你們違背了我的吩咐。

因此人民與摩西爭吵，說：“給我們水喝吧。”摩西對他們說：“你們為甚麼與我爭吵呢？你們為甚麼試探耶和華呢？”人民在那裡渴望得水喝，就向摩西發怨言，說：“你為甚麼把我們從埃及領上來，使我們和我們的兒女，以及我們的牲畜都渴死呢？”摩西向耶和華呼求，說：“我要怎樣對待這人民呢？他們幾乎要用石頭打死我了。”耶和華回答摩西：“你要到人民的面前，要帶著以色列的幾個長老和你一起，手裡要拿著你先前擊打河水的杖。看哪，我必在何烈山那裡的磐石上站在你面前；你要擊打磐石，就必有水從磐石流出來，使人民可以喝。”摩西就在以色列的長老眼前這樣行了。他給那地方起名叫瑪撒，又叫米利巴，因為以色列人在那裡爭吵，又因為他們試探耶和華，說：“耶和華是不是在我們中間呢？”

全體人民都看見打雷、閃電、角聲和冒著煙的山；人民看見了，就顫抖，遠遠地站著。他們對摩西說：“求你和我們說話吧，我們必定聽你的話，不可讓神和我們說話，恐怕我們死亡。”摩西回答人民：“不要懼怕，因為神降臨是要試驗你們，叫你們常常敬畏他，不至犯罪。”於是，人民遠遠地站著，摩西卻走近神所在的幽暗之中。
