号角声越来越嘹亮。摩西说话，上帝就回应他，声音好像雷鸣。

这地方叫米利巴泉，因为以色列人在那里埋怨耶和华，耶和华就向他们彰显了祂的圣洁。

在患难中呼求我，我必拯救你，你必尊崇我。”

以色列人看见法老大军追了上来，非常害怕，便呼求耶和华。

过了多年，埃及王死了。以色列人受尽奴役，就哀叹呼求，声音传到上帝那里。

到了破晓时分，耶和华从云柱火柱中俯视埃及军队，扰乱他们的队伍。

摩西祝福利未支派说：“耶和华啊，求你把土明和乌陵赐给虔诚的利未人，你曾经在玛撒试验他们，在米利巴泉边与他们争论。

耶和华说：“因为他爱我，我必拯救他；因为他信靠我的名，我必保护他。他求告我，我就答应他；他遭遇患难，我必与他同在。我必拯救他，赐他尊贵的地位。

那天，耶和华就这样从埃及人手中拯救了以色列人。后来，以色列人还看见埃及人的尸体横在海边。以色列百姓亲眼看见耶和华怎样以大能对付埃及人，他们就敬畏耶和华，又信服祂和祂的仆人摩西。

“亚伦要去他祖先那里了，他不能进入我赐给以色列人的土地，因为你们在米利巴泉违背了我的命令。

百姓便跟摩西吵闹，要他给他们水喝。摩西便对他们说：“你们为什么跟我吵闹？为什么试探耶和华？”百姓非常口渴，他们向摩西抱怨说：“你为什么要把我们带出埃及，让我们一家大小和牲畜都在这里渴死？”摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我拿这些百姓怎么办？他们准备拿石块打死我！”耶和华对摩西说：“你带着之前击打尼罗河水的杖，率领以色列的几个长老走在众人前面。我必在何烈的磐石那里等候你们，你用杖击打磐石，磐石必流出水来给众人喝。”摩西便当着以色列长老的面这样做了。摩西称那地方为玛撒和米利巴，因为百姓在那里吵闹，又试探耶和华，说：“耶和华真的在我们当中吗？”

那时雷电交加，号角嘹亮，山上冒烟，百姓看见此情景，都吓得浑身颤抖，不敢挨近。他们对摩西说：“求你跟我们说话，我们必听从。不要让上帝直接跟我们说话，恐怕我们会丧命！”摩西对百姓说：“不用害怕，上帝降临是要试验你们，好让你们时时敬畏祂，不致犯罪。”百姓都站得远远的，摩西独自走进上帝所在的密云中。
