I’m an outsider to my own family. I’m a stranger to my own mother’s children.

I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s sons.

Even my own brothers pretend they don’t know me; they treat me like a stranger.

Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me.

My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.

But he denied it before them all.“ I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there,“ This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”He denied it again, with an oath:“ I don’t know the man!”After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said,“ Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them,“ I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed.

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked,“ Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”

“ He has alienated my family from me; my acquaintances are completely estranged from me.My relatives have gone away; my closest friends have forgotten me.My guests and my female servants count me a foreigner; they look on me as on a stranger.I summon my servant, but he does not answer, though I beg him with my own mouth.My breath is offensive to my wife; I am loathsome to my own family.Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me.All my intimate friends detest me; those I love have turned against me.

For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with the woman who lies in your embrace guard the words of your lips.For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.

“ Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

For I have come to turn“‘ a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them:“ The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.”Going at once to Jesus, Judas said,“ Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.Jesus replied,“ Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.
