Moreover, David defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his monument at the Euphrates River. (niv)

So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said,“ As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim. (niv)

Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River; they went to Helam, with Shobak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them. (niv)

But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies. (niv)

Abishai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became subject to David. The Lord gave David victory wherever he went. (niv)

The man who brought the news replied,“ Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” (niv)

“ I will strengthen Judah and save the tribes of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them. They will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God and I will answer them. (niv)

After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophak the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him.But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophak the commander of their army.When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been routed by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore. (niv)

For no one is cast off by the Lord forever.Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. (niv)

Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? (niv)

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki- Shua.The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically.Saul said to his armor-bearer,“ Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it.When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day.When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them. (niv)

But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down. (niv)

Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me. (niv)

Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said,“ Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!”So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plow points, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened.The price was two- thirds of a shekel for sharpening plow points and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them. “ What have you done?” asked Samuel. Saul replied,“ When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Mikmash, (niv)

Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us. (niv)

Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us and no longer go out with our armies? (niv)

In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. (niv)

Amaziah then marshaled his strength and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men of Seir. (niv)

I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah— how he appealed to God against Israel: (niv)

Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved. (niv)

How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? (niv)

Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said:“ I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have raised up a young man from among the people. (niv)

He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and captured Sela in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day. (niv)

When the Israelites saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear. (niv)
