These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.

When I remember what has happened, I tell God all my troubles. I remember how I used to walk to the house of God. The Mighty One guarded my steps. We shouted with joy and praised God as we went along with the joyful crowd.

My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration!

I remember this as I pour out my heart: how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God, with joyful and thankful shouts.

I remember these things and pour out my soul within me. For I used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God, With a voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

I was glad when they said to me,“ Let us go to the house of the Lord!”

But Hannah answered,“ No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord.Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.”

And they brought in the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lordand distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins.Then he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel.Asaph was the chief, and second to him were Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, who were to play harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals,and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.Then on that day David first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord by Asaph and his brothers.Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered,O offspring of Israel his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.Remember his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan, as your portion for an inheritance.”When you were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account,saying,“ Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day.Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place.Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations,“ The Lord reigns!”Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it!Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!Say also:“ Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather and deliver us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!” Then all the people said,“ Amen!” and praised the Lord.So David left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark as each day required,and also Obed-edom and his sixty-eight brothers, while Obed-edom, the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah were to be gatekeepers.And he left Zadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord in the high place that was at Gibeonto offer burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, to do all that is written in the Law of the Lord that he commanded Israel.With them were Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and expressly named to give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.Heman and Jeduthun had trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.Then all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household.

You shall rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow who are within your towns.For seven days you shall keep the feast to the Lord your God at the place that the Lord will choose, because the Lord your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful.

On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the Lord had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.

“ Oh, that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me,when his lamp shone upon my head, and by his light I walked through darkness,as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was upon my tent,when the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were all around me,when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the square,the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose and stood;the princes refrained from talking and laid their hand on their mouth;the voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it approved,because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him.The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.I broke the fangs of the unrighteous and made him drop his prey from his teeth.Then I thought,‘ I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand,my roots spread out to the waters, with the dew all night on my branches,my glory fresh with me, and my bow ever new in my hand.’“ Men listened to me and waited and kept silence for my counsel.After I spoke they did not speak again, and my word dropped upon them.They waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouths as for the spring rain.I smiled on them when they had no confidence, and the light of my face they did not cast down.I chose their way and sat as chief, and I lived like a king among his troops, like one who comforts mourners.“ But now they laugh at me, men who are younger than I, whose fathers I would have disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.What could I gain from the strength of their hands, men whose vigor is gone?Through want and hard hunger they gnaw the dry ground by night in waste and desolation;they pick saltwort and the leaves of bushes, and the roots of the broom tree for their food.They are driven out from human company; they shout after them as after a thief.In the gullies of the torrents they must dwell, in holes of the earth and of the rocks.Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they huddle together.A senseless, a nameless brood, they have been whipped out of the land.“ And now I have become their song; I am a byword to them.They abhor me; they keep aloof from me; they do not hesitate to spit at the sight of me.Because God has loosed my cord and humbled me, they have cast off restraint in my presence.On my right hand the rabble rise; they push away my feet; they cast up against me their ways of destruction.They break up my path; they promote my calamity; they need no one to help them.As through a wide breach they come; amid the crash they roll on.Terrors are turned upon me; my honor is pursued as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed away like a cloud.“ And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold of me.The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws me takes no rest.With great force my garment is disfigured; it binds me about like the collar of my tunic.God has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes.I cry to you for help and you do not answer me; I stand, and you only look at me.You have turned cruel to me; with the might of your hand you persecute me.You lift me up on the wind; you make me ride on it, and you toss me about in the roar of the storm.For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.“ Yet does not one in a heap of ruins stretch out his hand, and in his disaster cry for help?Did not I weep for him whose day was hard? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?But when I hoped for good, evil came, and when I waited for light, darkness came.My inward parts are in turmoil and never still; days of affliction come to meet me.I go about darkened, but not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.I am a brother of jackals and a companion of ostriches.My skin turns black and falls from me, and my bones burn with heat.My lyre is turned to mourning, and my pipe to the voice of those who weep.

Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows, for never again shall the worthless pass through you; he is utterly cut off.

How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed! The holy stones lie scattered at the head of every street.

I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi, when the Lord has testified against me and the Almighty has brought calamity upon me?”

Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob!Raise a song; sound the tambourine, the sweet lyre with the harp.Blow the trumpet at the new moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.

And you shall rejoice before the Lord your God, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, the Levite who is within your towns, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow who are among you, at the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name dwell there.

And the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy.So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brothers Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brothers, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;and with them their brothers of the second order, Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and the gatekeepers Obed-edom and Jeiel.The singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to sound bronze cymbals;Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to Alamoth;but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to the Sheminith.Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, should direct the music, for he understood it.Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, should blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-edom and Jehiah were to be gatekeepers for the ark.So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-edom with rejoicing.And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod.So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on harps and lyres.

“ Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.”

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.

But Abraham said,‘ Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.

Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feast for another seven days. So they kept it for another seven days with gladness.For Hezekiah king of Judah gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep for offerings, and the princes gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. And the priests consecrated themselves in great numbers.The whole assembly of Judah, and the priests and the Levites, and the whole assembly that came out of Israel, and the sojourners who came out of the land of Israel, and the sojourners who lived in Judah, rejoiced.So there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem.
