我曾看到惡人的強橫，像本地青翠的樹那樣蔓延；

我見惡人勢盛、張大如青葱之樹、在其本土兮、

我見惡者強暴、蔓衍葱蘢、若茂樹兮、

我曾見強暴之惡人興旺、如根深葉茂之大樹、

曾見惡勢張。葱翠如春林。

I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,

I saw a mean and sinful person. He was doing well, like a green tree in its own land.

I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree.

I have seen wicked and ruthless people flourishing like a tree in its native soil.

Why do the wicked live and become old, Yes, become mighty in power?Their descendants are established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes.Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them.Their bull breeds without failure; Their cow calves without miscarriage.They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and harp, And rejoice to the sound of the flute.They spend their days in wealth, And in a moment go down to the grave.Yet they say to God,‘ Depart from us, For we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? And what profit do we have if we pray to Him?’Indeed their prosperity is not in their hand; The counsel of the wicked is far from me.“ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does their destruction come upon them, The sorrows God distributes in His anger?

So are the paths of all who forget God; And the hope of the hypocrite shall perish,Whose confidence shall be cut off, And whose trust is a spider’s web.He leans on his house, but it does not stand. He holds it fast, but it does not endure.He grows green in the sun, And his branches spread out in his garden.His roots wrap around the rock heap, And look for a place in the stones.If he is destroyed from his place, Then it will deny him, saying,‘ I have not seen you.’“ Behold, this is the joy of His way, And out of the earth others will grow.

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.“ Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying:‘ Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’“ All the kings of the nations, All of them, sleep in glory, Everyone in his own house;But you are cast out of your grave Like an abominable branch, Like the garment of those who are slain, Thrust through with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit, Like a corpse trodden underfoot.

All the birds of the heavens made their nests in its boughs; Under its branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young; And in its shadow all great nations made their home.‘ Thus it was beautiful in greatness and in the length of its branches, Because its roots reached to abundant waters.The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it; The fir trees were not like its boughs, And the chestnut trees were not like its branches; No tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty.I made it beautiful with a multitude of branches, So that all the trees of Eden envied it, That were in the garden of God.’“ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD:‘ Because you have increased in height, and it set its top among the thick boughs, and its heart was lifted up in its height,

For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm.They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men.Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment.Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish.They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily.They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth.Therefore his people return here, And waters of a full cup are drained by them.And they say,“ How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?”

Then Haman told them of his great riches, the multitude of his children, everything in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the officials and servants of the king.

‘ To which of the trees in Eden will you then be likened in glory and greatness? Yet you shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the depths of the earth; you shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude,’ says the Lord God.”

“ The tree that you saw, which grew and became strong, whose height reached to the heavens and which could be seen by all the earth,whose leaves were lovely and its fruit abundant, in which was food for all, under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and in whose branches the birds of the heaven had their home—it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong; for your greatness has grown and reaches to the heavens, and your dominion to the end of the earth.“ And inasmuch as the king saw a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying,‘ Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze in the tender grass of the field; let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let him graze with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him’;this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the Most High, which has come upon my Lord the king:They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.“ And inasmuch as they gave the command to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be assured to you, after you come to know that Heaven rules.Therefore, O king, let my advice be acceptable to you; break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening of your prosperity.”All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.At the end of the twelve months he was walking about the royal palace of Babylon.The king spoke, saying,“ Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven:“ King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you!And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.”That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.
