And the Philistines said,“ Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden.”Then the men of the garrison called to Jonathan and his armorbearer, and said,“ Come up to us, and we will show you something.” Jonathan said to his armorbearer,“ Come up after me, for the Lord has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and knees with his armorbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan. And as he came after him, his armorbearer killed them.That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armorbearer made was about twenty men within about half an acre of land.And there was trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. The garrison and the raiders also trembled; and the earth quaked, so that it was a very great trembling.Now the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and there was the multitude, melting away; and they went here and there.

And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

So they went out, they and all their armies with them, as many people as the sand that is on the seashore in multitude, with very many horses and chariots.And when all these kings had met together, they came and camped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.But the Lord said to Joshua,“ Do not be afraid because of them, for tomorrow about this time I will deliver all of them slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”So Joshua and all the people of war with him came against them suddenly by the waters of Merom, and they attacked them.And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who defeated them and chased them to Greater Sidon, to the Brook Misrephoth, and to the Valley of Mizpah eastward; they attacked them until they left none of them remaining.

Now the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude.And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said,“ I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed.”Then his companion answered and said,“ This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp.”And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said,“ Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.”Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.And he said to them,“ Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do:When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say,‘ The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!’”So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers— they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing— and they cried,“ The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!”And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled.When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying,“ Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.” Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan.And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued Midian and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.

And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the countryside.Then a man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said,“ Thus says the Lord:‘ Because the Syrians have said,“ The Lord is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’”And they encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day.

Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David.But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying,“ You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was one of the sons of the giant.Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant.So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

Then the Lord sent an angel who cut down every mighty man of valor, leader, and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned shamefaced to his own land. And when he had gone into the temple of his god, some of his own offspring struck him down with the sword there.

Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said,“ The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people who follow me.”

And the Lord said to Gideon,“ The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying,‘ My own hand has saved me.’

Then Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.So Asa went out against him, and they set the troops in battle array in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said,“ Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”So the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar. So the Ethiopians were overthrown, and they could not recover, for they were broken before the Lord and His army. And they carried away very much spoil.

O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained.

Thus says the Lord:“ Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;

And I indeed will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them. So I will gain honor over Pharaoh and over all his army, his chariots, and his horsemen.Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained honor for Myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me.But You have saved us from our enemies, And have put to shame those who hated us.

Then David said to the Philistine,“ You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.”So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.

With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people were strengthened by the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem( but he and all the forces with him laid siege against Lachish), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,
