You teach the way of God truthfully.Now tell us— is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their trickery and said,

Keep me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong.Let the wicked fall into their own nets, but let me escape.

Should they repay evil for good? They have dug a pit to kill me, though I pleaded for them and tried to protect them from your anger.

These arrogant people who hate your instructions have dug deep pits to trap me.

Don’t let the proud trample me or the wicked push me around.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy, for we have had our fill of contempt.We have had more than our fill of the scoffing of the proud and the contempt of the arrogant.

As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions.They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.Protect me from wicked people who attack me, from murderous enemies who surround me.They are without pity. Listen to their boasting!They track me down and surround me, watching for the chance to throw me to the ground.They are like hungry lions, eager to tear me apart— like young lions hiding in ambush.Arise, O Lord! Stand against them, and bring them to their knees! Rescue me from the wicked with your sword!

Pull me from the trap my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone.

A trap grabs them by the heel. A snare holds them tight.

Arrogant people smear me with lies, but in truth I obey your commandments with all my heart.

The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.Yet they succeed in everything they do. They do not see your punishment awaiting them. They sneer at all their enemies.They think,“ Nothing bad will ever happen to us! We will be free of trouble forever!”Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats. Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.They lurk in ambush in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people. They are always searching for helpless victims.Like lions crouched in hiding, they wait to pounce on the helpless. Like hunters they capture the helpless and drag them away in nets.Their helpless victims are crushed; they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.The wicked think,“ God isn’t watching us! He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!”Arise, O Lord! Punish the wicked, O God! Do not ignore the helpless!

To flatter friends is to lay a trap for their feet.

Then the people said,“ Come on, let’s plot a way to stop Jeremiah. We have plenty of priests and wise men and prophets. We don’t need him to teach the word and give us advice and prophecies. Let’s spread rumors about him and ignore what he says.”

The wicked have set their traps for me, but I will not turn from your commandments.
