They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;

民又依附巴力毘珥、食供亡者之祭物、

斯民之罪。不可勝計。逐物移意。耽心淫祀。奉事死神。食其所祭。

They joined in worshiping the Baal that was worshiped at Peor. They ate food that had been offered to gods that aren’t even alive.

Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead;

Then our ancestors joined in the worship of Baal at Peor; they even ate sacrifices offered to the dead!

They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.

They also followed Baal peor, And ate sacrifices offered to the dead.

They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor, And ate sacrifices made to the dead.

They joined themselves also unto Baal- peor, And ate the sacrifices of the dead.

They aligned themselves with Baal of Peor and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods.

They worshiped Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead.

They joined themselves also to Baal Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

“ When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your ancestors, it was like seeing the early fruit on the fig tree. But when they came to Baal Peor, they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol and became as vile as the thing they loved.

You saw with your own eyes what the Lord did at Baal Peor. The Lord your God destroyed from among you everyone who followed the Baal of Peor,

So Moses said to Israel’s judges,“ Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”

They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols.Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers.But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality.

Do I mean then that food sacrificed to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.

While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women,who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods.So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them.

But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands.They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats.Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

They sacrificed to false gods, which are not God— gods they had not known, gods that recently appeared, gods your ancestors did not fear.

“ They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people.

Was not the sin of Peor enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the Lord!
