Just then one of the Israelite men brought a Midianite woman into his tent, right before the eyes of Moses and all the people, as everyone was weeping at the entrance of the Tabernacle.When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spearand rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,

“ Son of man, do not fear them or their words. Don’t be afraid even though their threats surround you like nettles and briers and stinging scorpions. Do not be dismayed by their dark scowls, even though they are rebels.

Prostitutes charge for their services— but not you! You give gifts to your lovers, bribing them to come and have sex with you.

“ These are the very ones who followed Balaam’s advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against the Lord at Mount Peor. They are the ones who caused the plague to strike the Lord’s people.

They are a stubborn and hard hearted people. But I am sending you to say to them,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says!’

and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully.“ Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.

The wicked bluff their way through, but the virtuous think before they act.

But the people of Israel won’t listen to you any more than they listen to me! For the whole lot of them are hard hearted and stubborn.But look, I have made you as obstinate and hard hearted as they are.I have made your forehead as hard as the hardest rock! Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.

“ But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman— that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet— to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.

While the Israelites were camped at Acacia Grove, some of the men defiled themselves by having sexual relations with local Moabite women.
