A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.

A child who understands what is right learns from instruction. But a child who likes to eat too much brings shame on his father.

The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.

Young people who obey the law are wise; those with wild friends bring shame to their parents.

A discerning son keeps the law, but a companion of gluttons humiliates his father.

He who keeps the Law is a discerning son, But he who is a companion of gluttons humiliates his father.

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path:Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat,for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (niv)
