When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding.

When godly people win, everyone is very happy. But when sinners take charge, everyone hides.

When the godly succeed, everyone is glad. When the wicked take charge, people go into hiding.

Then on that day David first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord by Asaph and his brothers.Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually!Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered,O offspring of Israel his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones!He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.Remember his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,saying,“ To you I will give the land of Canaan, as your portion for an inheritance.”When you were few in number, of little account, and sojourners in it,wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account,saying,“ Touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm!”Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day.Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his place.Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! “ Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan.And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.Then the word of the Lord came to him,“ Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said,“ Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said,“ Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”And she said,“ As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”And Elijah said to her,“ Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,‘ The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’”And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.And she said to Elijah,“ What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!”And he said to her,“ Give me your son.” And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed.And he cried to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son?”Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord,“ O Lord my God, let this child’s life come into him again.”And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said,“ See, your son lives.”And the woman said to Elijah,“ Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the Lord had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.

When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it approved,because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him.The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy, and I searched out the cause of him whom I did not know.I broke the fangs of the unrighteous and made him drop his prey from his teeth.Then I thought,‘ I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand,my roots spread out to the waters, with the dew all night on my branches,my glory fresh with me, and my bow ever new in my hand.’

So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obed-edom with rejoicing.And because God helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as also were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the music of the singers. And David wore a linen ephod.So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouting, to the sound of the horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on harps and lyres.

See, my father, see the corner of your robe in my hand. For by the fact that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you, you may know and see that there is no wrong or treason in my hands. I have not sinned against you, though you hunt my life to take it.

Then David said to all the assembly,“ Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king.And they offered sacrifices to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and they anointed him as prince for the Lord, and Zadok as priest.

Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple, and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor.And in every province and in every city, wherever the king’s command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for fear of the Jews had fallen on them.

They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—of whom the world was not worthy— wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, as it were an error proceeding from the ruler:folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in a low place.

And Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites who showed good skill in the service of the Lord. So they ate the food of the festival for seven days, sacrificing peace offerings and giving thanks to the Lord, the God of their fathers.Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feast for another seven days. So they kept it for another seven days with gladness.For Hezekiah king of Judah gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep for offerings, and the princes gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. And the priests consecrated themselves in great numbers.The whole assembly of Judah, and the priests and the Levites, and the whole assembly that came out of Israel, and the sojourners who came out of the land of Israel, and the sojourners who lived in Judah, rejoiced.So there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem.Then the priests and the Levites arose and blessed the people, and their voice was heard, and their prayer came to his holy habitation in heaven.

And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but the Lord hid them.

As he was drawing near— already on the way down the Mount of Olives— the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,saying,“ Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, and your princes feast in the morning!
