Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.

“ Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

I broke the fangs of the wicked, And plucked the victim from his teeth.

But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed.So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested.And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side.

Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. But Gallio took no notice of these things.

Now as they were seeking to kill him, news came to the commander of the garrison that all Jerusalem was in an uproar.He immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down to them. And when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

Then Abishai said to David,“ God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore, please, let me strike him at once with the spear, right to the earth; and I will not have to strike him a second time!”But David said to Abishai,“ Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?”

And he called for two centurions, saying,“ Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea at the third hour of the night;and provide mounts to set Paul on, and bring him safely to Felix the governor.”He wrote a letter in the following manner:Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings.This man was seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by them. Coming with the troops I rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.And when I wanted to know the reason they accused him, I brought him before their council.I found out that he was accused concerning questions of their law, but had nothing charged against him deserving of death or chains.And when it was told me that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him immediately to you, and also commanded his accusers to state before you the charges against him. Farewell.Then the soldiers, as they were commanded, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.The next day they left the horsemen to go on with him, and returned to the barracks.When they came to Caesarea and had delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him.And when the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. And when he understood that he was from Cilicia,he said,“ I will hear you when your accusers also have come.” And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s Praetorium.

Now when there arose a great dissension, the commander, fearing lest Paul might be pulled to pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the barracks.
